RE: HPP under attack!!!! - Rob Tucker - 11-22-2008 So Jay, Is it your suggestion then that all of these situations, going back 17 years, would have been better served if firearms were involved? The subject was break-ins in HPP. Not that nothing bad has ever happened or ever will. RE: HPP under attack!!!! - JWFITZ - 11-22-2008 My mistake. Obviously break-ins up here in Fern Forest are not pertinent to the conversation. I often make that mistake, as I've been slow to figure out that Puna really means, at this point--well, it seems to mean almost exclusively Hawaiian Paradise Park. Would or could firearms be a modifying factor in these crimes? Or in general? I have no idea. I frankly don't care, and don't see how it matters. It isn't inconceivable to me that it might, and I guess it is my credulity in that sense that sets me apart from some, who seem to believe that in ALL WAYS ALL THE TIME IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES ABSOLUTELY NOT. At the moment, however, I do believe, firmly--an attitude I posses from first hand experience--that well measured, skilled, and prudent possession of firearms can be a positive influence on a community. Violence is a major problem in Puna. Anyone who doesn't understand that a culture that values dog baiting and cockfighting may have some latent issues is a little out of touch. I defy anyone to spend 15 minutes in Walmart without seeing some poor woman with her face mashed in dutifully trundling along behind some big swaggering a-hole. It is all around us. To deny this is self-indulgent narcissism. "Kill Haole Day" isn't that far off and there's a number who would like to bring it back. So has it happened? Who cares? Is it a possibility to happen, and do individual, sensible citizens have a right, and a responsibility even, to protect themselves against this possibility? I would certainly say yes. RE: HPP under attack!!!! - Seeb - 11-22-2008 To do something positive both the HPP neighborhood watch and the community emergency response team need volunteers and donations neighborhood watch- contact kile at kilegolden@hotmail.com hpp cert- contact karl at kseebruch@hawaiiantel.net RE: HPP under attack!!!! - Rob Tucker - 11-22-2008 This neighborhood watch team does indeed need volunteers and donations. Sorry Jay, I was not meaning to slight Fern Forest to the preference of HPP, I simply view the predominance of non-violent crime differently than violent crime. Non violent crime we have plenty of unfortunately and it seems to cause the greatest concern. Violent crime, which occurs, is much more unusual here. I am of the opinion that more guns in the general population will simply increase the number of violent crimes. Obviously others think more guns are the answer. The real focus is well placed above by Seeb. There is a beginning, largely ignored and unsupported by the various neighborhoods, to activate community watches. These have been and can be effective. It suggest that it is a small number of thieves repeating their crimes. They repeat because they get away with it. Catch them, send them to jail and you will see immediate increase in peace in the neighborhoods. By all means sleep in bed with a loaded .45 if that suits you. Do keep it locked away from children. Do keep it unavailable to thieves... we don't want them armed and they generally and mostly are not. But if the fear of crime truly concerns you then support your community efforts in reality by volunteering or donating. Press the Police Chief, Mayor and Council about the problem until they squirm. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Punaweb moderator RE: HPP under attack!!!! - oink - 11-22-2008 And make sure you file a written report of every crime. Just telling an officer about it doesn't count. The police administrators live by stats. Pua`a S. FL Big Islander to be. RE: HPP under attack!!!! - Jon - 11-22-2008 LOL "In this case a number of folks, newly arrived or thinking on it, want to bring their criminal fears here with them and, in so doing, risk ratcheting up the problems we have and making them worse. Please do not take a bad situation and make it worse. You will then be part of the problem, not part of the solution. " Rob, I did not bring any "criminal fears" with me, quite the opposite, From the slums of Texas to Hawaii... and we got robbed in Hawaii.. not might get robbed, "GOT ROBBED". and "WHILE WE WERE AT HOME"... The crime rate where we live is much less than were we came from, but we never had a problem there. We did not even have any guns here then, but after that, we has some shipped out. Just tonight as we left the house there was a strange car across the street. not in front of any house, just sitting there with someone it the drivers seat, had it been Texas, I would have just asked he everything was OK, but now, we just called the cops and went on our way... So I am becoming more "Hawaiian" like every day. What happens when you come home and the intruder is in your house, with your gun? Had you had a gun with you tonight... would you have approached the car across the street? Jon - What is the crime rate here? ------- My Blog RE: HPP under attack!!!! - Jon - 11-22-2008 well, if he as my gun, he is damn good... as its in the safe when we are not home... it is not legal to carry a fire are away from your home except to hunt or to the range... Damon, I know the law here, and I am not a law breaker. No, I am not allowed to carry a gun off my property in Hawaii except under specific conditions..... but had it been Texas I would have been allowed to carry, but it would not have mattered if I had it or not.. the occupant of the vehicle would not know if I was armed or not, in Hawaii they know they I would not be. Also, just so you get the picture, the car was parked in an area that is pitch black on overcast nights, something I consider very suspicious. Nothing like a little paranoia to unsettle the scum of the world. And when you stroll out to take that picture, being a physcopathic geezer, be sure to take a hickory, or by preference aluminum cane with you to take the picture, that way if the affore mentioned scum takes offense to the picture being taken, you are armed. In a fashion that even the state of Hawaii has not managed to make illegal, yet. dick wilson |
