RE: Waa Waa or Opihikao - robguz - 06-22-2012 Look for where Kamaili Road intersects Highway 137 aka the Red Road. Anything around the intersection or off of Kamaili (aka Opihikao Road) is considered Opihikao, although I'm not sure about the part closer to 130. RE: Waa Waa or Opihikao - coppercoin40 - 06-22-2012 thank you leilaniguy & robguz do you know how long ago the large lava flow and smaller one in that area took place? We Didn't explore the Opihikao (thanx for correct sp too) road & vicinity, but it looks like great farming area! Wish we had drove through there. RE: Waa Waa or Opihikao - csgray - 06-22-2012 The big Hawaii county map fondly called "the green map" has all the flows dated on it. You can pick it up at most KTA checkout stands. You will know right away why it is called "the green map", if it isn't obvious you grabbed the wrong map. Online Bing shows the names of all the ahupua'as if you zoom in, which is pretty cool. Kalapana Sea View estates is actually pretty close to Kamaili rd. and it was built on a pretty recent flow, geologically speaking. I find that using google earth to look at the flows gives me a much better sense of how the came down the mountains. Carol RE: Waa Waa or Opihikao - AKpilot - 06-23-2012 Hey Thanks for all the great replies! I have stayed on Sadileck and on Papaya Farms Road in Waa Waa, as well as on Pohoiki few times. We love both areas and would be commuting to Hilo rarely. Thanks so much you guys! AKpilot We're all here, because we're not all there! RE: Waa Waa or Opihikao - Kapohocat - 06-23-2012 Ak - Check out Rickerd's listing at Aloha Coast. I just happened to be working on a project for him on Kamaili Rd - near the bottom. Sweet piece of property. I personally love both areas - that would in fact be a hard choice. The lava flows at Kalapana Seaview and Kamaili were formed in the 1955 flow. This eruption also formed the steam vents on the highway. There was also a smaller eruption at the same time in what is now lower Leilani Estates. RE: Waa Waa or Opihikao - AKpilot - 06-28-2012 Hey Kapohocat, It's funny, I've been eyeing that property you've mentioned. I'll have to ask about it. AKpilot We're all here, because we're not all there! RE: Waa Waa or Opihikao - bananahead - 07-09-2012 All visible lava flows in that lower Puna area are very recent, 1960 Kapoho eruption for the ones near green lake/4corners/Cinderland/Papaya Farm Rd, most of the lava from this flow went towards the ocean, but its said if there wasnt a low spot there (called the Kapoho graben) to funnel it towards the ocean it would also have gone towards the WaaWaa/Honolulu Landing area. Farther SW near Seaview/Kehena the flows are from the mid 1950s and originate above Black Sands Beach subdivision. A large part of Seaview is actually built on this flow that forked and also made Kehena beach |
