It's not against the law to get an 808 phone number and a PO Box. It IS against the law to fraudulently file for a PFD. That's a big difference.

The best advice is don't come here without a job, unless you have an annuity or trust fund. The unemployment in Oahu is 6.3%, on the BI, it is over 9%, with some estimates it is 7% on Kona side and 11% on Hilo side. There are plenty of guys that live here and they aren't getting jobs just because they live here. There was a lot of employment in construction that collapsed along with the housing market collapse of 2007. Jobs in HMC and schools are billeted but not filled due to state funding shortfalls for several years because of the housing market collapse. There are some recovery signs but they are sluggish. Hilo is a university town and there is stiff competition for any retail work down town. The flip side is there are quite a few entrepreneurs that have come without work and are doing very well. These are in the minority though.

Dayna, while you are right about lawful difference, I was speaking to disception, which equates to dishonesty. Not exactly an ethical way to begin an opportunity for employment.

We purchased property here and while on our trip we got a P.O. Box and a phone. I didn't feel it was at all disceptive.... Nor dishonest.
We planned on making a permanent move and thus got a po box and a phone number..... Nothing dishonest there.
Not even close to being similar to illegaly filing for a PFD. IMO.

Dayna, Yes but your husband also got a transfer - correct? You did not get a PO Box or an 808# to "appear" as though you already resided here to better your chances for Island employment - correct?
Deception is deception, illegal or not
I mean if someone does those things to gain an interview lets say. Then what other lies are they going to tell to continue the deception in order to hopefully get a job? Oh what a wicked web you weave when first you practice to deceive! A person can be fired after being hired if they lied on their application or intentionally deceived or misrepresents to gain employment.You seem to be taking this personally. My comment was in response to your husband suggesting that someone deceive by getting a Hawaiian address and phone number.

Pahoated has it exactly correct: bring your money and/or job with you.
In my experience it doens't matter how "local" your phone number or address appear to be, you're not getting the job, they're not even going to call you back. If the job is good enough, it's already been promised to someone, the "process" of running an ad and collecting resumes is just a smokescreen, carefully designed to comply with the letter of the laws on employment.
This goes double for any "licensed trade", you practically have to be born into the apprenticeship.
The one exception is probably helicopter pilots.

Are we or are we not a nation full of immigrants? I understand holding on to traditions... believe me I get that. But to say that someone is HI deserves a job over a POSSIBLY more highly qualified person... ESPECIALLY IN THE MEDICAL PROFESSION... is absolute bigotry. If you want your hospitals to hire based on where a person has lived versus what their qualifications are, then you are disturbed.
I do however agree about the dishonesty and would not partake in it. But I believe the person who posted that was just trying to be helpful.

Rene, I have lived in Hawaii.... and I loved it.... otherwise I would not be considering a move back.
Just because I pointed out the illogical standpoint that coppercoin suggested does not mean I don't like Hawaii or Hawaiians.
