The Acetone struck my funny bone. Those seeing a measureable difference were probably benefiting from the acetones strong solvent properties nothing more than decarbonization of the valve and combustions chambers of the engine resulting in things like less detonation, improve air flow and cleaner fuel mixtures. Most professional injector cleansings and top engine cleaners produce the same results and are designed specifically for engines.

Amazingly enough just keeping your foot out of the depths of your throttle is enough to make a measureable difference, that is to say apply lighter pressure on the pedal and back off as possible to mantain you desired speed. Remember fuel mileage drops rapidly after 50 mph.

Bring your high mileage or poor performance vehicle in for an oxygen sensor checkup as this/these devices are what is/are determining the fuel adjustments/corrections made by the engine's controll module. Auto manufacturers build allowable ranges into the operating programs of engine computors to allow for "Acceptable Limits" Sometimes these acceptable limits are costing you 5,6,7,8+ mpg at the pump. There is a fine line between customer satisfaction and too many trips to the repair shop for an engine light on.

Someone mentioned tire pressure, I'd be willing to bet that if you leave that little responsibilty up to someone else to take care of, you won't have 4 tires all the same never mind to the right pressure get a gauge check and adjust them yourself.

Buy your gas from Top Tier suppliers here is a list check your area for availabilty;

TOP TIER Gasoline Retailers:

QuikTrip
Chevron
Conoco
Phillips
76
Shell
Entec Stations
MFA Oil Company
Kwik Trip/Kwik Star
The Somerset Refinery, Inc.
Chevron-Canada
Aloha Petroleum
Tri-Par Oil Company
Shell-Canada
Texaco
Petro-Canada
Sunoco-Canada

The intention of the TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline standards is to create a winning situation for gasoline retailers, auto manufacturers and drivers. Currently, many gasoline retailers provide fuels with lower-quality additive packages that can build up deposits on fuel injectors and on intake valves. Others can build up deposits in combustion chambers and may lead to intake valve sticking. These lower levels of additives can have negative impacts on engine performance and vehicle responsiveness.

Of course living on the Island with the largest cattle ranch in the country one would think methane would be the natural alternative fuel to produce ; )

We consolidate trips to town with the neighbors whenever possible. He drives 11 miles to work, I go to town once a week or less so we don't use all that much gas to begin with.

Even though we don't really use that much gas, my DH is starting to build an electric/hybrid car so hopefully sometime later this year we will be able to drive on sunshine. Our electricity is from photovoltaic solar panels. I'm not sure if an electric car is all that economically feasible if one is paying power grid rates for electricity.

And if the point is to get off using petroleum, charging from the grid is only transferring the oil usage to another source, since much of the electricity in the Islands is still generated by burning oil.

I use the free HeleOn bus service whenever I can (almost daily trips to Hilo to the university & shopping & such), have the highest MGP car I could find in '02, & am trying to reduce the amount of electricity I use, which is just behind transportation on this island for petroleum importing & consumption.

RE: As gas price climb here in Puna & Hilo.. - Tahunatics - 06-04-2007

We're going to sell two cars and buy the 2008 reengineered VW New Beetle TDI which can run on 100% biodiesel and get up to 50 mpg. I'm afraid the days of cheap gas are over.

Pacific Biodiesel is coming to the Big Island hopefully next year. They already have two plants on Maui and one on Oahu.

Isn't the "free" HeleOn Bus awesome! My wife started working at the Hilton Waikaloa. While in training she drove everyday, but now that training is over she rides the HeleOn Bus to Waikaloa.
I wonder how long the HeleOn Bus will remain free? I imagine at some point county officials will state that they must start charging to ride the HeleOn Bus to off-set operation cost & gas cost too. Currently who pays for it's operation...taxpayers?

I too am starting to use electricity as little as possible in my house. Once I move into my new house on 3rd Ave. in HPP is will switch out all the my lightbulbs in house for more energy effcient lightbulbs. Several of my lights will be flourcent kind. I wish my entire home could be a "Green Home", but who can afford that in Hawaii?

RE: As gas price climb here in Puna & Hilo.. - Carey - 06-04-2007

The bus is saving the county $$$ by having it free (they actually have published the #'s & more people riding the bus = less driving = less cars on the road = less demand on road services) this is esp. true for the Hilo/Waikaloa route, can you imagine what that route would have looked like this winter without the increased buses HeleOn added, with the road work to repair the bridges & all?
The county has ordered & will be putting in service more buses this summer. If you live anywhere near a bus, take it. Puna has the most versatility in routes, Starting in early morning & going until late night. Any one that lives along the main routes in Puna should be taking the bus at least part of the time to save gas, that includes all of Hawaiian Shores/Beaches/Rec, Pahoa, SeaView & anyone living within walking distance of 130. (We realized that we could have taken the bus to the full moon kite fly, but the Hubble telescope presentation came up... hope to do it next full moon)

I don't think all the buses have them yet, but Hele-On is trying to get bike racks on all the buses so that you can ride the bus to get close to your final destination, and then bike the last leg to and from the bus stop.

That's a great idea! Honolulu has been doing that with their buses for several years now. I wish they'd put them on all the buses here too. It would really get more people to travel by bus.

RE: As gas price climb here in Puna & Hilo.. - Carey - 06-05-2007

The regular buses for Puna (Both the Pahoa & Kau routes) do have racks installed. It does cost $1 to take your bicycle (that money is being used to buy more bike racks for the buses) If they have to run a bus that does not have racks, you can bring your bike on board (space permitting)
It is a great service for all of us.
