RE: Good Sushi joint - punafish - 03-14-2013 Ocean sushi is imho average at best. Miwa has a very bad reputation with Japanese nationals who visit from Japan regularly, and I agree. It's overpriced for what you get. I've never eaten at Nihonkan but it also has a less-than-stellar reputation. The best kept secret in Hilo is absolutely Ichiban; it's hands down the best sushi I've had on this side of the island, and the prices are reasonable for what you get. (The fish slices are a bit small but the quality is very good.) Oh yes, stay away from MIghty Sushi across from Malama. The worst I've ever had. Also, a little birdie told me there will soon be another sushi presence in Pahoa soon. It won't be fish, rather different kinds of rolls, etc. I'm told it'll be sold inside another existing restaurant. I know the "chef" is a Japanese transplant who used to have a restaurant in NY. We'll see how that goes but I'm hopeful! RE: Good Sushi joint - Norm - 03-14-2013 Dayan: Cream Cheese & Smoked Salmon is NOT SUSHI !!! Nihon for lunch is the best now new ownership. Been to Japan 4times sushi is great ,also in San Fran CA RE: Good Sushi joint - Carey - 03-14-2013 Pretty sure that Dayna started this thread with loving sushi AND non-standard sushi... We are in a fairly traditional neighborhood...and even some of them "break loose" with some non-standard varieties (and one of the standbys for most any event here is that roll with the ucky cooked (canned??)tuna...NOT ahi..sooo...sushi is the the eye (mouth) of the beholder... RE: Good Sushi joint - dayna - 03-14-2013 LOL cracks me up how worked up people get about a simple thread about sushi! Dayna www.E-Z-Caps.com RE: Good Sushi joint - Chuysmom - 03-14-2013 LOL...it's true, Dayna. I like Ocean Sushi 'cause you can get other "local" kine foods too. I love their asparagus tempura...yum. Carey and Jim turned me on to Ichiban...so clean and very good. Also at Ocean Sushi - the Bay City spicy is good...scallops and a spicy sauce on top. I think I might be easier going since I'm no sushi expert. Galadriel LOTR RE: Good Sushi joint - csgray - 03-14-2013 Ocean Sushi's other dishes are consistently good, and my vegan husband likes how many different vegie sushi's he can get there. I like the fact that it is not all hoity toity sit at the sushi bar and venerate the sushi chef style, instead a local girl with nice tattoos takes your order, brings you food, and you're good to go. They have ruined me on the grocery store sushi's boxes for lunch though, all the rice is too sweet for me! Carol RE: Good Sushi joint - Midnight Rambler - 03-14-2013 In Kona, there's a sushi place on the corner of Hualalai and Kuakini above Uncle Billy's that's cheap and quite good. I always stop by when I'm over there, it's a nice change from the expensive restaurants around there. RE: Good Sushi joint - shave_ice - 03-14-2013 They are serving sushi at Pele's Kitchen in Pahoa now. Went there for lunch today. I am not a sushi expert, so I don't know how it compares to other places, but I thought it was good. RE: Good Sushi joint - YurtGirl - 03-14-2013 If you are willing to drive North, there's a good sushi place in the KTA shopping center now in Waimea. I've heard it's good... Can't eat sushi myself for another couple months, sooo looking forward to it!! I am always surprised at the deplorable state of our seafood availability here in Hilo and surrounding areas. I mean, WHAT is up with THAT?! We are in the middle of a huge ocean right? Last I checked? I found more and fresher seafood in Arizona than the East side of the Big I! Craziness... That and the rice in the sweet soy cone thing. I like it but don't consider it in the same category as your fancy sushi. I always considered it more of a tuna salad sandwich, and it was priced that way. Musubi category? Pua`a S. FL Big Islander to be. |
