Thank you, Pog. I'll be flying into Big Island today and get much more information over the coming week. My son can barely speak coherently over the phone. Then I'll be able to know first hand what truly happened w/out making judgements first.

ah anna so sorry to hear of your loss. it makes us all want to hug our children tight. made me flash to some very close calls with my children. they move so quickly, the tiny ones, in a blink they can be gone. to the grandfather who must be devastated in what he perceives as his role in this, the universe spoke, he was simply the witness. prayers to your family...

I'm so sorry to hear this. I pray that you and your family can find a way to be at peace with what happend, despite it's intensely tragic nature. It sounds like your son is in need of grief counseling, and unfortunately, guys tend to resist any form of counseling. This can (not always, but can) lead to self destructive behaviour.

This type of event is often marriage ending. They should be aware of that and take measures to avoid that outcome.

I am reminded of a program I watched on TV about settlers crossing the great plains in covered wagons. It was the kids that suffered the highest rate of accidental death in just this sort of manner, playing or otherwise occupying themselves as they moved among the wagons and animals, a moment of inattention, then disaster.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My infant grandson died of SIDS in 2001. What often happens with grandparents is that we want to take care of the child's parents, as is natural, but we have a hard time letting ourselves grieve. I found hospice counseling to be very helpful but I also appreciated online support from other grandparents. I highly recommend the MISS Foundation (http://www.missfoundation.org/). They will email or mail you a family support packet and you can access the grandparents' forum as well. (Check under "support" on the home page)

Oh, heart HURT!
So sad to hear. Blame does no good in these situations. As much as we want to strap our kids to our sides at all times and put a protective bubble over them, we can't. We must let them live outside of our own fears. This is the kind of thing that could really happen to anyone, it only takes a second. We can all try to learn from and take precautions, but life isn't guaranteed and freak accidents happen. So sorry for the families loss, I hope you do seek counseling to forgive, be thankful for the short time, and be able to let go.Melissa Fletcher
