Always good to have friends in low high places..

I doubt Billy has much pull with the DOE, they are a very insular Oahu centric organization that is virtually impenetrable for neighbor islands. Maybe Abercrombie could do something about this, but once the election was over he hasn't given charter schools the time of day. He sure was friendly before he was elected though.

the department of education is the only department in the executive branch that is not in the governor's cabinet. hence, they are accountable to the board of education. when it was an elected position, it really stunk. now, the governor has some control over it by appointing members to it. that's good and that's bad. the bad part is that republicans will have a hard time sitting on the board. that makes it a politically correct makeup with no opposing viewpoint. education is one of those situations where it should remain non-political, or non-partisan, or bi-partisan with both sides of the aisle collaborating on behalf of our children. politics always stand in the way. the children bear the brunt of it.

Ah yes, "Oahu-centric" again (yet, still).

Why do the neighbor islands continue to tolerate this mistreatment?

I (and others) pay taxes to the State, which then uses this money to screw everyone who doesn't live in Honolulu, or at least "on Oahu".

RE: The DOE screws Charter Schools - pahoated - 08-06-2013

This is more about sequestration and the Teapublican controlled House of Representatives. The Teapublican platform includes elimination of the Department of Education, as well as the Department of Energy. This is to lessen the tax burden on the wealthy. Sequestration is starting to hit several areas of education beyond busing, with whole programs being wiped out, like some head start and school lunches for the poor programs.

People don't pay attention to government unless they are directly impacted. The effect of sequestration on education was being ignored until, guess what? The school year starting.

The US has not had a budget for almost 3 years now. Obama was forced to accept sequestration or deal with the government being shut down. The end of the FY is Sep. 30. There is no agreement on the FY14 budget, there is no agreement on the level of the deficit, there is no agreement to raise the debt ceiling. If these are not resolved in the next few months, then the sequester becomes automatic across the board cuts. The Department of Education could be looking at across the board cuts of 25%.

These are the House representatives that are the architects for this plan to have no plan:
Paul Ryan, R
Eric Cantor, R
John Boehner, R
Rand Paul, R

This is NOT about the poor decisions being made by our elected officials who serve at the national level.

This IS a bad decision made by a highly entrenched organization that is so resistant to change that they had the nerve to change a policy without the policy making arm of the DOE knowing about it. The Board of Education sets policy and the DOE is supposed to carry it out. That is NOT what happened here, in fact it was just the opposite.

mahalo carol...WHINING about a part of congress, repub, demos or teas, is tiresome..

RE: The DOE screws Charter Schools - pahoated - 08-06-2013

Said by a Teapublican, naturally.

Due to sequestration, DOE is cutting the areas they believe are still fat. It's not just the bus, they have cut school food and early start programs. These are happening all over the mainland, too, so there goes the Hawaii "good ol' boy" conspiracy hallucinations. It's just people around here suddenly realizing the effects of sequestration after the lag of absorbing it is happening. The Teapublican majority House, put in by a huge majority of the voters, have a mandate to draw a line in the sand for FY14. If the debt isn't raised, a deficit agreement made with revenue, then the automatic spending reductions happens, which is going to be an across the board 25%. Then, some of you people can drag an effigy of Kenoi in a noose behind your SUV, that will really be a solution.

HA! Wait until this state goes bankrupt. Then you'll all have plenty to grumble about!!

RE: The DOE screws Charter Schools - kalakoa - 08-06-2013

Confused, as usual: HAAS was paying for rides on the DOE bus, and now those seats will go empty. How exactly is this "trimming a loss"?
