I think it is best to keep police numbers at a minimum. The mainland is basically a police state at this point. If Puna has not gotten to that point yet that is a good thing. The violent crime stats are way low in Puna as well which in the long run is the type of crime that matters the most. In many cases a stronger police presence will just escalate and amplify the type of crime that already exists. A large number of police are just old washed up thugs looking to control or an excuse to get violent. Be happy that Puna is peaceful with out a huge police force. It shows the what the people are made of.

Wow! On the one hand it's a relief that it's not true but to lie about something like that is unconscionable. However I thought there was another incident with a different student reporting a similar story?

Why do some people come here and insist on complaining about the way life is here. Most of us are here because we like it the way it is. If you continue to fight reality you will lose.

Why are you the police?

No not mad just telling the truth. I have been bullied and harassed by police several times. I have never been arrested but I have lived in several different types of areas in this country, inner city, urban, suburban, rural, etc. etc. and have known good and bad police. The bad out number the good partially because even the ones who take the job with some honorable intentions are often manipulated and exploited by having their paycheck used as a way to manipulate them into acting against populations. The police on the mainland, I don't know about Puna, now have full on military gear. I don't know why they would need all that. I tend to think the smaller the police force the more efficient they will be. Police don't learn how to mediate or negotiate resolutions anymore.

Anyway, I don't want to get off topic

So yeah… lying about rape is bad.

Actual rape is much worse.

I see two possibilities here. She either lied (yay she didn't get raped, right?) Or she is covering up for the rapist because she is scared of the rapist or cares for the rapist in some way, which is more likely the case here. Because I don't know allot of women who would lie about being raped there is a huge stigma that comes along with that and women do know about this stigma, trust me. On the other hand it is very common for women to cover up for their rapist because it is a family member or a person with perceived power over them via aggression, threats of more rape, etc. Rape is a messy thing and when someone comes out with a claim like that whether rape occurred or not that person should be treated very seriously and the claim should be investigated even if they take it back.

So now everyone knows she's a liar. So will any potential rapists. She may have put a target on her back. oooooopsssss. Hopefully if there's a "next time", she will be taken seriously - again. Actions have consequences - somtimes they manifest in curious ways.

Funny how we interject our own experiences.... and bias

I think she lied to deflect attention from the fact she wasn't getting the grades (from the paper) - and Mom was going to take the car away. - my inference

agreed, the karma of unplanned consequences huge
