Naranjilla makes the best juice. When I lived in Ecuador it was our favorite for breakfast. I think the heat is to much for it to grow in lower Puna. Does snyone have any luck growing it in the lower elevations? Mine didnt last long.

Mine is growing great in Orchidland with no cultivation. I just stuck it in a bit of soil left over from the bulldozer- then I promptly forgot about it, and went to "cultivate" my other plant purchases (half of which have already succumbed to the jungle). I went to find it the other day and it is 5 feet tall with fruit. I have no idea why it is happy where it is planted. It is in partial shade and at the edge of a cleared area. I have never watered it, and we've had long stretches recently with no rain. I guess if I get another one to plant in Hilo, I'll try and approximate the same kind of growing situation. (my house it higher here in Hilo than Orchidland) Anyhow, Yeah, the fruit is really tastely. I was pleasantly surprised because I had heard that tree tomatoes didnt taste very good. (but of course, I subsequently have found out it's not a tree tomato) Where did you buy your plants that didnt make it? Was it at Makuu market? thanks.

I got mine at Macuu, but im down on the coast and i think its too hot, but i may try another one with more shade.

I think I'd plant it in total shade where you are... Give it a try. The soil is full of clay up in Orchidland also. Don't know if that is good for it also... I'm going to go and get another one at Makuu. Thanks!

"naranjilla" (with an a) is the more common spelling. also called lulo
maybe that will help you track it down.
I saw one plant that was about 6'x6'x6', in Fern Acres. I've had mixed luck with thme, I think they're heavy feeders. my current one grew out of the compost pile, in full sun at 1500 feet
