I am recently retired & will be moving to the BI with 4 dogs, 1 parrot & 1 horse. I've got a handle on the dogs & all that's required for their immediate release. Reading all your posts has been insightful too.

Does anyone know how to ship or fly a horse from Washington State to the BI? I know what needs to be done medically, but am having a difficult time finding info on the actual move.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure you follow the parrot requirements to the letter. If you don't your parrot will be sent back to city of origin.

We moved 7 parrots here and it was way more stressful and complicated than the dog stuff.

Sheila Head's Hawaiian Transport specializes in shipping horses.

You could give Akona Pet a call, they are located in Kailua-Kona they may have another option on shipping horses.

I will be trying to bring my 3 cats in roughly 8 months. I am wondering does the flight have to be nonstop? I don't see any nonstop flights available from NYC. What cities can one fly nonstop to Kona?

Perhaps book separate flights.

Other than Phoenix I don't believe there are any other mainland flights direct to Kona that depart cities other than those on the west coast. You can check for yourself via this site:

Thank you for all the responses! Will be checking into all the resources you've offered.

We flew multiple dogs from TN and drove them to CA so they could have direct flight. I didn't trust airlines with layovers and unfair for animals to be in crates that long.... pet air says they ship all. Check flypets.com for horses. We used alaska air from oakland to kona and had a great experience. Used Dr. Chartier and loved her for direct release. There is one boarding kennel in Puna that will do quarantine instead of honolulu and they are super clean and nice. So if you needed that...bar king kennel in Orchidland.

We did Alaska from San Jose to Kona. They were GREAT. And by the time we were off the plane and went to the check-in counter, our dog was already being examined by the vet and released in a very short time.it wasa very positive experience. My only suggestion wouldvbe to consider fully refundable tickets. A little pricier, but well worth it for us as we had to change our flights once.

We brought a small dog that fit under the seat through HNL. That worked pretty well. If your dog is a service animal, s/he stays with you throughout the process. If not, they take your dog after you land at the gate and you pick him/her up at AG.

It took 120 days for the blood test which was the gating factor. I suggest you double-check the Hawaii AG database to make sure your dog's microchip number is listed and the date for first entry.

Checking to see if anyone has had more recent experiences with shipping pets over. Right now planning on direct release in Kona. Any preference to the Kona Veterinary Service and Keauhou Veterinary Hospital? These were the two listed on the hdoa website. Appreciate the feedback and information regarding more recent experiences. Oh, and airlines used in the past? Thank you!
