Huge challenge out here to keep things clear. Are you building right away? I think that may be the only way to keep it clear. Constant vigilance. I only go out every couple weeks. (I live in Hilo)

I bought a couple trays of perennial peanut, but I realized that was gonna get real expensive, real fast. I eventually want to replace all my lawn and weedy areas with perennial peanut. So I just purchased some perennial peanut seed at Garden Exchange. It is also expensive at $60/pound, but in the the long run it's gonna be much cheaper as a little seed goes a long way. Something to think about if you still wanna do the perennial peanut thing.

Perennial peanut requires too much preparation, care and $$$ for me. I have much better results with the low growing form of Desmodium, which was already started here and is slowly spreading further. Now that I am pretty much done with clearing and tree planting, mulching and Desmodium sprigging are high on my to do list.

UKJ, you are about 4 miles from us and Microage97.

Aulii is the last street in Orchidland going that direction. The next long street over is Ainaloa.

Thanks @UKJ and @Shave Ice! I went with clover from homedepot @ 8/pound of seed. I bought 10# for 30.00 off of amazon but it seems they are shipping it on the barge or some such. Sigh. We are planning on building either later this year or next year. As long as it doesn't get over run like the current state of the untouched parts it shouldn't be too hard to keep under control. The stihl bush cutter is a beast and swings the .130 line almost too fast. :-( I am over 1/2 done with knocking everything down with the exception of the large stands of Melastoma candidum with large 4+" trucks which I will need the chain saw for. I have also been using the 2,4-D on all invasive stumps.

Yep, huge amount of work. It will stay clear if you keep working on it constantly, but some trees and vines seem to appear overnight. You can plant some clumping bamboo, coconuts, bananas and avocados near the perimeter and get a head start - at least for them to grow. They seem to survive fairly well in the jungle with minimal cultivation. I've had good luck with these as well as well as some other fruit, that I forgot the name of, but that I wrote another thread on. I thought it was a tree tomato, but it's not. Forget about any kind of "regular vegetable garden" - see previous threads.

Was out Friday, 4/25 with the sprinkles and out right rain. I figured as long as it wasn't out right raining I could run Mr. Chainsaw. I managed to get a very large Melastoma candidum bush cut down that obscured the corner a bit. Then I headed to a very old and large stand of Melastoma that is in a small trench covering 30' X 100' or so. Looks like this stand has been there for at least yrs. The trunks are speghetti like and require you to chain saw your way in. Sigh.....I will need to continue chop this infestation out. I wish I have a large wood chipper. Lots of mulch to be had...

Make sure you are poisoning the stumps as you go. If you don't then everything seems to just grow right back.

RE: Pukas / Cracks / Ect - microage97 - 04-28-2014

Oh ya I have been using 2,4-d to spray down all cut stumps. I hope it kills them....

Your lot probably has part of the Kazumura Cave running under it. In the original plans, all the main roads in Orchidland were perpendicular to the highway . When Auli'i was being dozed, there was a major cave-in just makai of where 38th is now. The subdivision plans were altered, and Auli'i had a 'dog-leg' added to go around the cave-in, and had it's designation changed from a 'main' road
( 60' wide ) to a 'side' road ( 40' wide ). There is also another recent cave-in just mauka of 38th, where someone was trying to get a housepad cleared, and again, the dozer fell through the roof of the cave.

RE: Pukas / Cracks / Ect - microage97 - 04-30-2014

That must be why there is a white fence around an area of a lot. I hope I don't have a cave under there. I know that there was a large lava tube running across my lot that appears to be caved in and I guess uncaved in on the neighbors and down to 38th.
