It's a reasonable fee, I just hope they can prevent delays and traffic problems.

It will be interesting to see what they do at the back gate. We leave that way so we do not have to wait for the left turners at the main entrance.

The back gate is exit only, isn't it? They just have to put one person there to enforce it.

I suppose this was inevitable, the market was running out of room.

I only remember seeing people exiting, but there is no marking nor anyone at the gate.

It's interesting to read very few words of support here. I know it always seems like a burden to pay when it's been free for so long, but $1 won't make or break most people. Over the years Maku'u Market has obviously been putting plenty of money into improving parking and infrastructure. I have certainly appreciated being able to get in and out easier than it used to be. And the market and vendors are obviously making money too. That's good as far as I'm concerned - I want them to be successful! $1 is a small price to pay for having such a great resource and ohana gathering that happens every week.

I hate to support all the negative energy with Makuu but, I agree with the previous posts. I dunno I hardly ever go (maybe a handful of times a year) because the Vegetable/Fruit vendors there don't seem to be happy or outgoing but maybe it was just me? Usually Makuu is kind of stingy (no 3 for 5) or any break at all that can be found at Keaau or Hilo farmers markets. I go where I can get a better buy and now even a dollar more to park? No thanks, I'll probably never stop. The only reason why I went was to see the plant / tree people or see what was happening with the local solar suppliers.

All that said, hope we don't see cars trying to park along side of the 130 and that Makuu makes it. I support other markets. Maybe they should reconsider the buck charge and open up the market on a weekday. I doubt for most people, a buck is a drop in the bucket to most people and will continue to go.

It's not the $1 that will keep me away so much as the probable delays caused by collecting the dollar and the additional potential for chaos (and danger) caused by people trying to avoid paying. Add in the existing confusion that often prevails in the parking lot, and the potential for a royal mess can't be ignored. It may eventually turn out to be fine, but I'm staying away until it all settles out. This will hurt business there, at least in the short run.

$$$1$$$ for car parking can look modest to some yet be a pair of very important shoes for some boy or girl in your local community?. $1X4 SUNDAY'S A MONTH = $4 x12months = $48 dollars or = Shoes. Look the market is just over priced yard sale material, over priced re-sold produce sometimes from your local grocery stores, Tourist friendly and tourist priced marketS anymore. Some of these vendors are probably a new form of American farming slaves?. These markets are the blackmarkets of farming, I wonder how accurate the taxes are from these vendors or farm producers?. Is this land soviern or Hawaiian?.
Now if the market gets 300 vehicles on sundays that would be $300 a week or $1,200 a month x 12 = $14,200 a year until they double it to $2 per vehicle next year. $14-$30,000 a year for parked vehicles could be a nice donation from our community?. What is this money going towards if not our KIDS shoes?. P.S All my kids have shoes right now, yet we buy our produce from the farms themselves for it's usually a nice drive, free parking, and fresh on picking day's, not to mention cheaper or free if I feel like working. Get out and meet your local farmers. Less vending more farming.

Maybe this is why "Pearls" closed or was closed?

Yes and no -- supposedly they gave up because of County, but there were rumors that DOT was about to become interested in their driveway.

No problem, just drive to Hilo, right? (There are other bakeries, but good BBQ is much harder to find...)

Like the flooding a couple of weeks ago... such an improvement...

Then they need to make it far less inconvenient to give them the money. It's already a 45-minute drive; I don't want to sit in my car for another 20 minutes.

Not very ironically, there aren't any closer farmers' markets, because County shut down the "private subdivision" markets for lack of Special Use Permit!

Sustainable much?
