Napa caters to delivering parts to auto shops too.

There are few ("legal") auto shops in the Greater Pahoa Area.

Starbucks ... close to the dreaded Keaau bottleneck.

Speculation: more likely to get a Starbucks in Keaau -- near the HMSA admin building.

RE: Pahoa Observations - Carey - 07-21-2014

They have been doing the HWY 130 cleanups for all of the 8+ years we have lived in this house... so maybe they are just doing cleanups...with no other "reason" for the location choice (they could also be working with "Keep Hawaii Beautiful" to clean areas that are needed... but this is just a guess as to why they would do several areas along the hwy....some companies & organizations have adopted certain areas along the highway...)

RE: Pahoa Observations - csgray - 07-21-2014

Carey,
I wasn't ragging on Starbucks, just surprised to see them "adopting" a stretch of road to cleanup that is so far from any of their stores. The Pahoa bypass near HAAS is miles and the Kea'au bottleneck away from their nearest store. Just the logistics of doing the cleanup seems more complicated and time consuming when there are unadopted stretches of road so much closer to the various Hilo Starbucks.

NAPA I'm surprised about, I didn't think Pahoa and lower Puna had enough people for a corporate store to move in, and more surprised they didn't rent one of the empty spaces in Malama Marketplace. Wasn't the Tin Shack coffe shop once a chain auto parts store?.

Carol

Tin Shack Bakery site used to be Pahoa Lex Brodie's and was Pahoa Auto (Body) Repair for a while.

RE: Pahoa Observations - Carey - 07-21-2014

Carol, didn't say you were, but there was a speculation involved..and another posted speculated that the bottleneck cleanups were due to HMSA...

My point was merely that they have been doing these cleanups along 130 for much longer than HMSA has been involved in the Keaau property, and may just be doing cleanups either per the request of 'Keep Hawaii Beautiful', the county...or maybe the volunteers (not all are even Starbuck employees or customers) doing the cleanups like to vary their view....

I do not know WHY they clean the stretches they do, but only know they have been doing it for many years, and over different sections of 130 (maybe they even do other areas), so I really doubt it has anything to do with distance to stores or future stores...

I don't know if former CC is the best place for a parts store, but who knows? In all of my experience with Pahoa Auto parts, I have to say that my times have been lukewarm at best. Once, he would not take my debit card because my silicone sealant I purchased came out to $6.98...not the $10 minimum he required for credit card/ debit purchases. Yep, I guess his business is thriving as much where he could turn away sales like that.

ON several other occasions, I was forced to chose Pahoa over Hilo auto parts centers because it was Sunday. I found the offerings to be limited, and the customer service to be so-so once again. I could deal with limited offerings if the customer service is on point. I have never felt quite welcomed at Pahoa auto parts. But then again, what the hell do I expect? It's a a freegin parts store! Well, let's just say that I very much appreciate the good service at Automotive Supply and a few other HIlo parts stores. I want to support local Pahoa, I really do. But sorry, it just has not warranted much for me give a good review. I look forward to Napa.

Depending on the merchant service provider, a business might pay a percentage on each charge (1.5-4.5% or so) as well as a per charge fee ($.25-$.35). On a $7.00 item they might not make enough of a profit to make the charge worth while.

RE: Pahoa Observations - terracore - 07-21-2014

For credit cards, (debit cards are lower fee) higher end rates are 2.9% of transaction plus thirty cents. Lower ends are 1.5% plus seventeen cents. Assuming they are on the higher end, the $6.98 tube of sealant would have cost them fifty cents to process. A ten dollar sale would have cost them fifty nine cents to process. Hard to believe they would throw a sale away in this manner especially considering its possible the $6.98 sale could have potentially had a higher profit margin, depending on what the item was. I can understand not allowing debit/credit cards for purchases on things under a dollar, but any other limitation fails the common sense test.

RE: Pahoa Observations - PauHana - 07-21-2014

I have found Pahoa auto parts cheaper than NAPA. Add in $4.00 in gas and 2 hours travel' way cheaper.
I priced brake parts at NAPA on the phone and drove to Hilo to get them. Ford always has a dozen variations on the same part, so they didn't' have my part when I got there.
Pahoa asks which one do you need on the phone. Now I call them first.

RE: Pahoa Observations - lavalava - 07-21-2014

If he doesnt know at Pahoa AP - he looks it up and helps you figure it out. Napa always says uhhhhh we dont know about that. Being limited to the Napa brand and only the brands they partner with is pretty lame IMHO.
