Cool, thanks for all the response! Now I can actually be prepared
Now for the hard question. My car is being picked up on the 22nd. The Transporter tells me I should expect the car the land in Hilo around Nov 15th. My plates expire in CT on November 1st, but it just seems so silly to renew my registration and pay $140 for plates that I'm going to have to send back the day my car reaches HI..... What to do?

The hitch is that if you want kamaina rates you need a valid HI drivers license or a state ID card. So I went and got a state ID card. (Note: Depending on whether you have an actual house address you might have to wait six months to prove residency to get the state ID.) For most is probably best to get the HI license…

RB and I got our State Id's with our escrow papers, showing that we owned property.

I'd call hawaii DMV and explain your situation to see how much it may cost to renew plates that have expired...
I hear that they give you credit ... Say your plates expire in two years then hawaii will give you credit for that... So, you might want to think about renewing them...
My problem was that I was thinking of moving back....... So, I thought it was stupid to switch plates from Oregon to Hawaii just to switch them back to Oregon a few months later. Sigh...
