RE: Motion Picture Film of Hawaii 1924 - Kelena - 10-17-2014 If you watch this, turn down the sound. The music is designed to vex and annoy. They sure wore a lot of clothes back then. The scene of ladies helping pull in the nets while wearing thick clothing that covers everything but their faces is astonishing. I find it shocking that anyone could be convinced to wear such clothing in the tropics. The railroad bridges that tower above the gullies are frightening and Kilauea was pretty menacing when it was younger. Apparently, it still has some life in it. RE: Motion Picture Film of Hawaii 1924 - PauHana - 10-18-2014 Mahalo for the memories. The film is silent, talkies didn't arrive until 1927. The musician at the theater would have played the music provided. I wonder if that was the origional music. RE: Motion Picture Film of Hawaii 1924 - leilaniguy - 10-18-2014 Those frightening railroad trestles are the same ones that are holding up HWY 11 today. Now that's scary! RE: Motion Picture Film of Hawaii 1924 - Midnight Rambler - 10-18-2014 I believe that trestle was taken out by the 1946 tsunami, along with many others, which is what led to the train being replaced by the highway. They still look awully shaky even to hold up the train! RE: Motion Picture Film of Hawaii 1924 - punafish - 10-18-2014 I really love this video, thank you so much for posting. And I agree the music is just wrong. So Kelena inspired me to watch it while listening to my friend's slack-key original, "Takin' Up Slack". It works beautifully but would need to be looped. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8WjtvQqSCA RE: Motion Picture Film of Hawaii 1924 - kander - 10-18-2014 Yes, I agree totally lame audio track. But the film is pure gold. Had I uploaded the video, I would have picked something more appropriate for the time it was made. It was the roaring 20's after all. RE: Motion Picture Film of Hawaii 1924 - malolo - 10-18-2014 Wonderful clip. Enjoyed. Thank you. For die-hard history-buffs and train-lovers, here's another (longer) treasure: "Life on the Rail in Hawaii." A 45-minute 2012 documentary, with terrific historic Big Island footage, and starring an amazingly frisky fit sharp 91-year-old gentleman who was one of the last brakemen and conductors for the Hawaii Consolidated Railway. Fascinating. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_RTM88uzCqg RE: Motion Picture Film of Hawaii 1924 - kander - 10-18-2014 Thanks Malolo, Sure wish the rail was still here. RE: Motion Picture Film of Hawaii 1924 - David M - 10-19-2014 That was really awesome, malolo. Thanks David Ninole Resident Please visit vacation.ninolehawaii.com |
