Did they say anything about beach road? There is no gate on beach like there is on railroad. Wonder if they will continue to maintain it or just let it fall back to being a one road 4WD path.

I assumed that with the lava stalled that they would be closing the road within a few days, so we drove it this weekend just to see a small part of Puna that otherwise we may not. Saw an I'o, very little traffic. Great experience. Glad we could do it while we could.

Some years ago I had made a proposal for PMAR to be developed as a parkway. A parkway is a traffic route which does not allow trucks or commercial traffic and is generally designed as a scenic route.

At this point in time the section of Railroad Ave developed as an emergency route may be a taste test on a Parkway design though a parkway would be paved. So the experience of the drive is worth considering. I like the idea of a road through natural undeveloped lowlands uncluttered with HELCO's ugly utility poles stuffed with wires. Personally I would not pick the old Railroad right of way but what is done is done.

Macuu222, Beach has always been a legal right of way, but they chose not to maintain it until recent events. Railroad was not a legal right of way, and is a special case that was arranged via its owner, the state, just for the emergency. That's why the county can't legally shut off Beach, but feels like they can with Railroad.

I agree Rob, 35 mph with bike/jogging/walking lanes.

We should insist that the new Railroad be maintained and improved .

Back to the present for one observation...the RR speed limit on the gravel road between HB/HS and HPP is 20 mph, perfect for the road conditions. But once you reach the nice, smooth pavement on the HPP side, the speed limit drops to 15 mph, perfect conditions for a speed trap. I understand it's about respecting the people who live in the area. And I swear--I tried to go 15 mph, I REALLY tried! But even 20 mph was painfully slow. I thought the guy driving the tinted-windowed monster truck behind me was going to shoot me. Not saying people shouldn't go 15 mph there; I'm saying they probably WON'T.

Now back to the future of jogging, walking and biking lanes. That would be awesome...

Speed Bumps every 150 feet would fix that.

The 15 mph part of the road is in HPP.

You might want to check with HPP Bored people.

Looks like Obie is trolling the HPP residents again. For someone who is so protective of his own subdivision's rights, privacy, and lifestyle he sure has a lot of time and energy to denigrate other subdivisions for trying to protect their interests when dealing with the county. You would think anyone with a life would have something better to do.
