RE: Drive To Hilo - kalakoa - 01-12-2015 the only affect of the PCDP forward is where to build them. Rephrased: no new locations are designated by the PCDP. RE: Drive To Hilo - Rob Tucker - 01-12-2015 A bunch of new locations are designated in the PCDP. How many locations do you want? How many locations does Puna need? That was answered, as best it could be, by the PCDP. RE: Drive To Hilo - kalakoa - 01-12-2015 That was answered, as best it could be, by the PCDP. I consider the PCDP a symptom rather than a solution. In either case, the money isn't there anymore, so it's mostly moot. RE: Drive To Hilo - Rob Tucker - 01-12-2015 The PCDP was not intended to be a solution. It was intended to be a map of the residents intentions and preferences. That is all. Not a magic anything. And besides, the money was rarely there at all. Only recently did a few investors decide the market was ripe enough to spend.... and when they did they did so under the guidance of the PCDP. RE: Drive To Hilo - kalakoa - 01-12-2015 I'll ask it this way, again: Puna continues to grow, but the infrastructure isn't keeping up. Obvious solutions are either more lane-miles to Hilo, or more commerce in Puna; it seems unlikely that either/both of these will happen in a timely fashion, so we need some other answers. Yes, Makuu market is wonderful, but from here it's a longer drive than Hilo. Yes, we have the guidance of our fine PCDP -- but it basically says "development off the highway and away from people's homes", and due to the way Puna was subdivided, these requirements are difficult to meet, even with community support. "Grow your own, trade with neighbors, shop on Amazon" is a workable solution, but it doesn't contribute as much to our local economy. Anyone else have more/better ideas? RE: Drive To Hilo - ironyak - 01-12-2015 kalakoa - are you are in upper Puna, or just very near Keaau? I restricted my commentary to lower Puna as that is what I am more familiar with. What is upper Puna's equivalents of Malamas, Longs, or Ace? While there are many issues that affect Puna as a district, it always seemed like there are three distinct regions of Puna. Upper: Keaau to Volcano (rural, highway concentrated development) Middle: Keaau to Pahoa (most residential - few interspersed services) Lower: Pahoa to Kalapana/Kapoho (most rural - little to no services) Perhaps some of the needs or goals for these regions differ enough to be considered separately? If the lava continues the rates of growth for these areas will be quite different (already seen in the exodus from lower Puna and the rapid build out of HPP and OLE). How's residential growth in upper Puna looking since the lava's approach to Pahoa? RE: Drive To Hilo - kalakoa - 01-13-2015 What is upper Puna's equivalents of Malamas, Longs, or Ace? Drive To Keaau, although the micro-Longs there doesn't count for much. The general store in Volcano just upgraded to a bigger building. Perhaps some of the needs or goals for these regions differ enough to be considered separately? How ironic that we have one PCDP and two voting districts for the three regions. RE: Drive To Hilo - leilanidude - 01-13-2015 As many times as I had been to Foodland over the years, I never even noticed that there was a "micro-Long's" in the same shopping center until a couple weeks ago when people mentioned getting rx's filled there. Now I have to go in, just to look. RE: Drive To Hilo - kalakoa - 01-13-2015 Now I have to go in, just to look. Yes. Especially if you think Orchidland was "gouging". RE: Drive To Hilo - VancouverIslander - 02-18-2015 There's J. Hara store in Kurtistown if you want a few groceries, sporting goods, some hardware, etc. Great bakery in Mountain View, a gas station and a small garden supply store. Just call me Mike |
