Waterworks used to sell the 50 or 55 gallon blue water barrels for somewhere around $100. They are very sturdy and made specifically for water. Maybe check out Island Catchment too as they are closer being in Keaau.

On the cans, just strap them against the bed and fill in place. The will move around ( water inside them will ) but stay in place from weight. Siphon out when home.

Could drywall screw the lids on too for the trip home ..

Typing this as its just starting to rain for the first time in weeks in town ... Maybe don't need now ?

Choke Dee.

We bought six 5-gal water jugs from Walmart years ago and still use them during dry spell to haul water in our little Honda Civic. This past two weeks, my husband went to fill the water jugs everyday for our animals and some fruit trees.

trash can methods here sounding good.

a little rain of the kind where water actually might achieve a small steady flow-like dribble into the tanks happening uphill.

A plastic air bed (Coleman or equivalent) in the back of a pu truck. It takes the shape of the truck bed, and holds about 100 gal. (800 lbs aprox). You can put a second one on top of the first one if you like.
Rig a hose and valve on the inlet to fill. 1/2 in CPC fit mine perfectly , and a small 12 volt pump to transfer the water into my tank. Transfer takes maybe 30 minutes at home.
The water doesn't leak or slosh around.
Good luck.

good idea, PauHana. seems a repurposed waterbed mattress (vintage 70's of course) would be even better as it is built to handle the H2O weight.

Yes that would be even better. If you had a camper top you might not even need the electric pump to get the water out.
