Not really. What is going on now with the longshoremen is equivalent to fast food workers striking for a $15 per hour minimum wage.
The ports in Singapore and Shanghai are almost totally robotic with about 12 people loading and unloading thousands of containers. The US longshoreman union won't let that happen, just trying to extend their jobs. That is why the gigantic super container port is being built in Mexico, to circumvent the US longshoremen.
It's a tough spot for the Democrats, needing and supporting unions, but almost half the jobs today will have robots in their positions in 20 years. Microsoft has some security guard robots out in California and they are operating at $6.25 per hour and that is with some profit margin. These social gyrations will swing wildly while the transition occurs.

The quickest way to replace human fast food workers with automation is to mandate paying humans $15/hour. Fast food jobs have existed for decades without paying a living wage, and robots aren't alive.

The lumber yards in Hilo looked like ghost yards (ghost towns). Contractors, etc went in and bought up every scrap available because the building boom was just starting it's positive climb.

Oh by the way - a little known statistic = 3 days per person per roll. I think stat was based on single roll not big fat double rolls, and I think it was based on non-gender specific average.

The ports are scheduled to close over the weekend, but will begin operating again on Monday.
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union and the PMA have been renegotiating an expired labor contract since May. The PMA has accused the ILWU of intentionally slowing down work at the port since October. The ILWU says major changes in the industry, not the union, is causing the ports to operate slower.
"The PMA is playing a dangerous and unnecessary game of brinkmanship by idling vessels for two days in a not-too-disguised effort to intimidate the ILWU membership," said Jennifer Sargent, spokeswoman for the ILWU.http://www.bizjournals.com/seattle/news/2015/02/06/west-coast-ports-halt-activity.html

1971 was an ugly situation . long gasoline lines empty store shelves , and job loss in the form of layoffs . not good . walmart was packed at 7 am today safeway not much better people were buying like a major storm was coming . I have 2 vehicles being shipped in and they have been delayed 2x to make the barge still waiting , called slow down it is an edgy situation .
