What can I say? I don't think centipedes and roaches running around the house has anything to do with snow falling on Mauna Kea.

TomK - We are on the church computer here in Mtn View,almost ready to start our Saturday feed.When we left the Glenwood farm earlier at around dawns light of a new blessed day - we were getting upper atmospheric rains,this type of rain makes a totally different sound on the tin roof than trade wind rains,more akin to snow above 10,000feet.
Here at the church sunny bright overcast.Perhaps a precursor to what is down the pike or we may yet dodge the proverbial onslaught of the two systems merging,one from the SW at a lower elevation and the one from the Siberian express from the N - NW.
Gypsy those are called B-52s,the roaches ,and peeds and the B-52s are very sensitive to atmospheric gradient changes and do tend to come inside,but they are also a favorite snack for a peed.Peeds also have a mate,so if the peed you put back outside has a partner,chances are,you will see him or her in the very near future.
Tom Good Job - we are ready now to open the doors to the hungry and will be back later in the late evening.
Keep us all posted on the WX conditions on the majestic peaks.

A Hawaiian Airlines plane got hit by lightning last night about 7 pm near 2 thunderstorms near Honokaa;

Usually pilots try to avoid thunderstorms, I'm not sure why this plane would fly so close to them;
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/HAL380

Thankfully, the outcome was only getting hit by lightning, planes are well designed to survive lightning strikes. But the turbulence/down/updrafts makes it risky to get too close.

There are better websites for lightning detection but most of them seem to be non operational at this time. This one's good for a general view;

The cold front was moving NW to SE so most of East Hawaii would be relatively dry from the rain shadow effect of Mauna Loa;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rain_shadow

We will lose the rain shadow effect starting tomorrow as the direction of the rainstorms will change to NE to SW and a very wet trade wind pattern will develop with high precipitation amounts;

RE: Snow on Mauna Kea - TomK - 02-28-2015

Snow started falling at the summit late this afternoon, and is now falling heavily. Could have quite a few inches if this carries on overnight.

RE: Snow on Mauna Kea - TomK - 02-28-2015

Amazing how fast the transition of no snow to lots of it was this evening. Shows how easy it is to get caught out on the summit and end up in trouble.

Snow starts falling at around the 18:00 mark.

I appreciate the updates and the pic! Mahalo!

RE: Snow on Mauna Kea - TomK - 03-01-2015

Thanks for that photo, Carey. For those who are curious, the observatories you can see, from right to left, are CFHT, Gemini and the UH 2.2 meter (in the old days, the UH-88inch). If you look closely, to the left of the UH observatory, you can just make out the top of UKIRT's dome.

More snow this evening, another inch or so. MKSS briefly opened the road to the summit this morning but closed it again after ice started forming and snow began falling again. Monday morning's MKWC forecast should be interesting.

RE: Snow on Mauna Kea - TomK - 03-03-2015

12-18 inches of snow expected at the summit during the next 24-hours. I'll believe it when I see it, but this winter storm is now forecast to last into next week. So much for our well-thought-out mid-infrared re-commissioning plans...

I hear thunder in the distance again.

RE: Snow on Mauna Kea - Guest - 03-03-2015

Tom, good evening to ya. See you posted a possible 12-18 inches of snow expected at the summit in the next 24 hrs. That's great news for the whole island really. Most of the time snow up top equals rain down below. Would you know how many inches of snow equals an inch of rain? I thought it was 8-10 inches of snow. Anyway maybe we here in Puna can expect an inch or two, that would be nice. Thanks for the update, I'll have to go fishing early then.
