More rules;

1. When there is a half mile of two lane traffic stopped and waiting to merge into one lane; everyone merge left at once. (Left lane vehicles should back up and make room).

2. Please, no one use the now 1 mile of empty right lane. That would be cheating.

3. NPR usually has interesting programs during Rush Hour, but baseball season will soon be upon us(Go Giants!).

4. Always leave for Hilo (and back) at the same time, with a single occupant, to maximize the Keaau crawl camaraderie.

5.Nothing really to list here, I made #5 as a Feng Shui thing.

(6) Stop at Alibi pub and down two, somehow the alcohol manages to clear all the traffic. Miracle cure.

I complimented an old hippie leaving Malama Market a couple of years ago. His shirt read I MAKE STUFF UP. If i see him again I 'll introduce myself. "Hi, Pahoated, I am Peter."

Seems that the 3 rules of big island driving are:

1.When you know your lane is ending ahead...

You forgot the part that the "Slower Traffic Keep Right" signs are really a political statement (Slower Traffic Keep Being Conservative) so everybody has to pass in the right lane. Of all the Big Island driving conundrums, the one about people driving slower in the left lane will never cease to confuse me.

terracore, I completely agree. When driving out of Hilo toward Kea'au on 11, the right lane is almost always your best bet. Baffling.

Seems that the 3 rules of big island driving are:

1.When you know your lane is ending ahead, always wait till the pavement ends before you merge. The farther you push it, the more points. Never merge early, as that's a sign of weakness.

2.No matter how fast the car ahead of you is going, always ride their bumper. Whether they are doing the speed limit, or 30 over, ride their bumper!! Leaving a safe distance between your car and the car ahead is a sign of weakkness. And if it's dark, ride their bumper!! How can you properly blind the driver ahead of you if you don't ride their bumper??

.......

classic. ha, i do believe you may have hit the nail on the head as to the subconscious M.O. "...as that's a sign of weakness"
