RE: Pahoa Pantry & Soup KItchen - jimbob1st - 04-07-2015 Thank You tomk. A check or money order can be made out to: Pahoa Pantry & Soup Kitchen P.O. Box 2082 Pahoa, Hi 96778 Every penny of your contribution will go to the preparing, transporting and/or buying of food at a huge discount as a 5 year account holder at the Hawaii Island Food Basket. We make most purchases at 18 cents a pound as a 501 © (3) non profit. We get our chicken and beef for free (based on our records kept through sign in of how many people are fed), our salads and vegetables are paid for and prepared by our volunteers along with our desserts, and we can supplement this with our purchases at the HIFB of rice, pasta, bread, produce, bottled water, etc... We were really depleted of our resources after both hurricanes of last year along with those feeling displacement during the lava flow but because of a generous single donation, we are back stronger than ever. For your information, we will be picking up over half a ton of food (1,000 lbs) this Friday which we will be distributing to needy individuals and families in grocery packages at the Pahoa Community Center at 4:30 p.m. while partnering up simultaneously with Kalapana Mauna Kea Church who will run the soup kitchen. tomk please come out if you have a chance and share in a meal, fun, and fellowship with our wonderful team. We invite the public to prepare a dish (maybe a dessert, salad, or entree), bring fruits or vegetables from your garden, make a donation (and a donation through this program can go a long way and truly make a difference), or just bring yourself down and see how happy and joyful our local residents are when warmth, comfort and aloha are extended to those, who at these times, may need it the most. This is a great worthwhile community based experience to be a part of. James B. Furst RE: Pahoa Pantry & Soup KItchen - jimbob1st - 04-08-2015 The Pahoa Pantry & Soup Kitchen had another great day on Tuesday, April 7th...our soup kitchen served many plates of food and are noticing more new faces that were not over the years previously in attendance. This Friday on April 10 the PPSK will be setting up our NEW pantry in picking up 1,700 lbs. of food from the Hawaii Island Food Basket, will truck and trailer it back to Puna, we have a permit to use the Pahoa Community Center's room and we will be starting around 12 p.m. noon (maybe earlier to set up our NEW pantry) with an assembly line system of setting up packages and boxes with our goods. At 4:30 p.m., PPSK with the Kalapana Mauna Kea Church will run a soup kitchen and pantry simultaneously serving the needy and homeless a hot meal while giving out free groceries to people. We invite everyone to get involved in however makes you feel good. Our website, still in the construction phase, will have a PayPal account to take donations and we assure the public that no one is on staff nor being paid and all donations will go towards helping battle the hunger issue in our community. James B. Furst RE: Pahoa Pantry & Soup KItchen - pahoated - 04-08-2015 A 501c3 is required to register with the state and the IRS, even if there is "no profit". There are search tools to check on 501c3 status. Pahoa Pantry and Soup Kitchen does not exist in the state or IRS records. http://www.irs.gov/Charities-&-Non-Profits/Exempt-Organizations-Select-Check Failure to register with the state and the IRS is fraud. "Aloha also means goodbye. Aloha!" RE: Pahoa Pantry & Soup KItchen - snorkle - 04-08-2015 Eat the rich! (please get all permits first) RE: Pahoa Pantry & Soup KItchen - kalakoa - 04-08-2015 Feed the poor! (as long as you get permits and a tax status first) RE: Pahoa Pantry & Soup KItchen - jimbob1st - 04-08-2015 The 501 © (3) the Pahoa Pantry and Soup Kitchen uses and is registered under a separate entity, we have been operating under this separate entity and the separate entity is registered with the State of Hawaii, IRS, through this separate entity we have a clear bill to operate and have so for the last 5 years with these very state and federal agencies and is recognized by all the agencies we work and partner with including the Hawaii Island Food Basket (who accepts federal funding to assist their hundreds of programs they also work with and would not be working with us if we did not, for 5 years) nuff said James B. An organization does not simply "use" another organization's tax exempt status. RE: Pahoa Pantry & Soup KItchen - Peter Easterling - 04-08-2015 My wife and I spend a fair amount of time at Pohoiki. Often people bring and leave food for others. Never saw this happening on Oahu and it is another example, to us, of why we love this place. Thanks, Rob, for letting me know about this organization. Leaving bags of beans at Pohoiki is a bit hit or miss. I appreciate knowing where we can reliably donate our fruits and vegetables.
