RE: Neighborhood Thefts - Kapohocat - 11-19-2007

My hope in posting the description was to alert others to these characters and maybe thwart another ripoff.

punapetah,

You are a breath of fresh air and a hoot to boot! Smile Thanks for making me smile this morning.

Still, it's hard not to be thinking VIGILANTES UNITE!...sure hate seeing people get ripped off.

Aloha Smile Tim

quote:
We've been robbed numerous items in Hawaiian Acres, a brand new costco car port, numerous tools, wheel barrow, diving equipment, gardening stuff even fertilizer. My next door neighbor came over last week and told me he caught one of our neighbors in the act and so have other neighbors. They live almost directly behind us, kitty corner, so we are being robbed by our next door neighbors! My neighbor is afraid to call the police because he's growing medical pakalolo.

Well I'm sorry to hear of your losses, this is incredible the number of times you have been hit, and perhaps by your own neighbors. Add yourself to the map?

The only thought that comes to mind right off is for the neighbor who is afraid to report these thefts, because he is growing medical pakalolo, (IE "da chronic" that really cracked me up da chronic), should get a medical license, prescription for his medicine! Then this neighbor could be part of the solution not shrugging the shoulders and allowing the theft problem to go unaddressed, perhaps???

What response have you received from the police department when you reported these thefts, for those of us uninitiated?

I thought the HA association was one of the better ones. Have you shared this at association meetings?

Good luck, and aloha.

Aloha Mella,
I just found out the likely ripoffs last week and have yet to do anything about it. Not sure if its worth starting a Hatfield vs. McCoy confrontation. For anyone else in the area such as HADave, she and her son live on Rd. 6 halfway between F & G, makai side. I'll leave names out for obvious reasons. I'm looking for a steel container to make my stuff more secure. We're building a home right now so I should probably notify the police and let then handle it.

RE: Neighborhood Thefts - hooligal - 11-19-2007

Warning: Computer nerd with too much time on her hands...

I created a Google Account and Google MAP for 'us' to track thefts. Anyone with THE username & password can log in & put a pushpin on the map. You can also enter details for the pushpin if you wish (photos, date, time, location, description, goods stolen, etc).

It's pretty cool and easy. Google has a 'how to video' explaining how to create new 'pushpins' on the map.

Now comes the hard part...
* How do we manage the map? I can post the username & password to the forum & anyone can edit the map. We just have to trust that no one will use the account for nefarious purposes. Or, if a few folks want to volenteer to collect and enter theft data, the username/password will be in their hands only.

* how do we 'safely' share the map info? Anytime theft info is posted on the web it can be used by the bad guys. If you put a push pin on the map, you're advertising you have something to steal. Please keep that in mind. I would set the maps to 'hidden', which means it won't come up in a google search. I'd post the url in punaweb, but again, if we can see it, so can the bad guys. There isn't any way to guarantee or control who sees this stuff.

Any thoughts? All I have done so far is create the account & a blank map pointing at Pahoa Smile Easily deleted if folks think this is a useless or crappy idea.

We can create a second map too (with the same account) for folks to post low helicopter overflights & possibly suss out a flight path pattern.

RE: Neighborhood Thefts - hooligal - 11-19-2007

Mella, me too until my housemate said "just make a google map". I'm currently dorking around with a bunch of google map plugins - my current favorite lets you input a sea level rise & it redajusts the shoreline, with the folks who are swimming shaded red. I just scared myself! Too bad there isn't a 'where goeth Pele?' plug in, ha ha.

RE: Neighborhood Thefts - Scott_S - 11-19-2007

Tahunatics, my place is on 6 between f and g and I haven't had any problems in a couple of years. One time someone broke into our shed. Back then we didn't have any neighbors. Have these people you think are the culprits recently moved in? Sorry to hear you are having trouble, I take it your not living there yet? Your making me nervous, none the less.

Scott
