Bought two of these as "temporary throw away units" - have 7 years of daily use on them ...changed the 2 d cell flashlight batteries that power the igniter every two years or so... when they give the ghost I plan to "upgrade" to the bosch unit....not holding my breath...
with proper venting / exhaust they can be mounted inside ...

Our cottage came with one of the eccotemps, but it was dead and we swapped it out for a Takagi Jr. I don't know how long the eccotemp lasted, but the cottage was first built in 2006 and we purchased it in 2012, so may have been almost 6 years? The Takagi has been in place a couple now and going strong.

most of those battery powered units fail due to corrosion at the connections ...a little "deoxit" spray fixes it. The little brush top bottle better for precision antique stuff like worn volume pots.
rambling on - Many of the tv's, radios that give up the ghost can be brought back by a spray or two...use it sparingly - at 40 dollars a can this stuff pricey ...but lasts years - a little bit does it.
Just used some on my "vacuum tube tester" power switch ....saved a piece of very expensive, but rarely used, equipment -

corrosion at the connections
Pack some grease around the battery contacts. Vaseline works well.
With the cover off: use a bit of RTV to seal up the top of the battery holder. On very rare occasion water can drip through into the batteries, causing them to go flat prematurely. No leaks -- this happened during the winter drought, never before or since, probably some condensation inside the unit.

new installs ---blue water proof boat trailer grease works well on lan connectors, phone line taps etc
for precision stuff - deoxit reduces voltage loss ...those flash heaters invert 3 volts to make a spark...maybe 1kvolt or better ....any resistance due to grease on the primary side may be too much
or remove the connector, solder and shrink tube ...spray can get into the on / off switches etc - a common culprit as the internals oxidise
