Thanks, Opihikao. Just to be clear, I'm agreeing with you. My own experience is that crime has increased. My immediate neighbor (who moved away just a few weeks ago) was burgled twice in a few weeks in the last year. Before that, none of us here had been burgled.
I'm torn because I can't quote real stats because that's how I'm trained, but I'm also a well-trained observer, and can see what's been happening in our own area in a pretty objective manner. It's not good, and the change is quite dramatic.

...you do realize you titled this thread "crime statistics / Hawaii County". I don't see what is so unreasonable about asking for some actual statistics to illustrate a crime wave. It's kind of a basic starting point given the topic, you know?

Pog - suspect in general that's good advice. In our case, there really is only one way in and out, so probably not necessary. However, I will have an easily movable security light soon, so will be able to utilize some surprise locations!

Kulani was a minimum security prison, I was told it didn't even have a fence around it. My understanding is that it's more like a camp so would require major upgrades to keep the prisoners from just walking away. Because right now that's possible.
opihkao, you mentioned sex offenders in your post. Do you know who the majority of inmates at Kulani were? Sex offenders. With no fence to keep them in. County priorities.

Opihikao, good rant. Mahalo for the thread, it does warrant plenty of serious discussion's in hopes for better solutions to the increase of crime. pretty desperate times for many out here in Puna, many recover from storms or lava emergencies differently than others.
Certainly many reasons why puna has its fair share of crime reported (calls), don't think its as bad as the 70's-or-80's though, it could be worse? For every call or report of crime that comes in, another Two acts of crime may go unreported? To many times bad things can happen, or bad things can get worse, when you call our police for help. Anyway times are tough out here in the wild wild east, we may need plenty of changes to occur on many levels to seriously slow the areas crime wave down? Get some Well off people with jobs out here committing crimes too? Been plenty of Kimura type white collar crime in our area. Plenty leading from the front these days with Pcard crime, bribes, favors, or turn your back crap at the top of the pyramid. Maybe we Shouldn't just blame it all on the folks with no jobs, or start chasing out many of the good lazy people from Puna for their bad habits just yet? jmo.

There are some changes going on. The price of scrap copper and aluminum is plummeting. This means all the stripping of empty houses is probably going to slow down. The general thievery might go down but these boys need cash. Afraid the scrap stealing is going to turn to strong arm robbery now. The other thing is bath salt designer drugs are legal and easily available to order. This stuff makes people feel like they are invincible in the early stages, usually overheating, so they like to run around naked, and so hopped up, hardly anything takes them down. Mix that with DMT and you will have full fledged psychopaths doing home invasions.
