Gmail sucks for several reasons

Sure, and my Toyota beats your Chevy -- just gotta pick which "suck" you can tolerate.

Well, I can't tolerate the aspects of Gmail that suck. Hence why I decided to do the setup that I did through Go Daddy.

Mahalo,

So the unstated implication is that I can sign up with gmail, select "custom" and somehow keep @hawaii.rr.com ? That seems counterintuitive.

RE: Time Warner Cable/Charter Transition - Aaron S - 08-20-2016

The @hawaii.rr.com domain *may* be phased out by my Time Warner Cable's new owner, Charter Communications. I highly doubt Charter would continue paying the licensing fees to Time Warner Inc. to use the Road Runner trademark.

I obtained my own domain, and hosted e-mail account through Go Daddy, but YMMV.

GMail will only handle "custom" domains that you control; the "validation" consists of your inserting a TXT record at the top of the domain.

The "paid" version sucks less -- and it's way cheaper than managing my own spam-trap.

The cloud version of Microsoft Office 365 has built-in spam controls, along my e-mail program, FossaMail. In other words, its not all that difficult to manage. The cost to use Office 365 for your e-mail access is only $4.99 a month through Go Daddy.

[quote]Gmail sucks for several reasons, such as the spam filters don't work, there is too many security hoops to jump through, they limit the size of files that you attach to your e-mail. I could go on...

??? It catches all of the spam sent to me, including Nigerian scams which get by a lot of others, with almost no false positives (the very few wrongly put in the spam folder are usually marketing emails from places I actually did do business with, so that's not bad). The attachment size limit is 20MB IIRC, which is likely to be equal to or bigger than the limit your recipient has. And those security things are there for a reason - it allows you to see who has logged in to your account recently.

There are various reasons not to like Google having control over your whole life, but these are pretty weak.

They may be weak reasons, but last I checked this is free country where I can make my own decisions. I decided to share what I did in advance of this transition to help people out, not to get belittled for my choice.
