Ironic that gypsy69 is leaving the islands for lack of opportunities and better education for the kids, yet has continuously spouted falsehoods about the TMT project. Gypsy doesn't even read the article which is filled with reasons why Canary Islands sucks for TMT compared to Maunakea and concludes it's probably the best decision.

These deluded people think a telescope is the same as an oil pipeline. They think help will pour in and an all out war will start, then I just feel sad for the all around mental state of affairs.

(sorry, in Spanish)

The Spaniards are happy. All that money and technology, coming their way. I wonder if they will get any anti-science protestors?
I doubt it. Good luck to them. Oh well, maybe we can build some more golf courses.

Can we locate the war on pohakuloa training grounds? So no innocent bystanders are injured? If so, I'm all for it. The predator drones are gonna wreck those lifted pickups though.

Protectors might want to check their vehicle insurance policies before heading out too. Most companies don't offer coverage for damage incurred during "all out WAR."

I heard through a reliable source that Ben Magec – Ecologistas en Acción
sent a letter to the backers of the TMT project expressing their opposition to the construction of this telescope in the Canary Islands.

Interesting! We Are Roque de los Muchachos. Maybe the telescope's only chance of ending up in Hawaii.

And maybe they need our support. 80,000 Facebook likes here we come...

"Can we locate the war on pohakuloa training grounds? So no innocent bystanders are injured? If so, I'm all for it."

O.k. this is probably hijacking the thread but this reminds me of a very terrorizing event that happened to us as we were on the saddle road , just before Pohakuloa on our way to Kona.
We heard an extremely loud bag. We pulled over , thinking we had a flat tire. No, tires were all good . Started our car and just in alignment with the Pohakuloa training facility , BANG! it happened again.( And No we weren't stoned!!!) My husband booked it past the training area as fast as we could and we actually slumped down in our car to avoid any "stray" whatevers!!!
Well, we found the culprit when we got to our hotel. 2 bags of chips in the back seat of our car had exploded !!!

RE: Poof - TomK - 03-29-2017

Reni - I used to use that phenomenon to play a joke on visiting astronomers that had never been to the summit before. If I were driving them up the mountain I'd always buy a large bag of chips which I'd put in the vehicle's trunk. It would invariably explode, usually somewhere on the Summit access road, and the visitors would always look around concerned. I would just say "Don't worry, one of the tires blew, but we'll be fine" and simply carry on as if nothing had happened. The looks I got were priceless, although I always showed them what had happened when we got to HP.

There was also an "incident" many years ago at UKIRT. Our director was observing and had taken some yogurt up from sea level. During the evening he tried to open it and it exploded showering his keyboard with yogurt which then stopped working - right in the middle of an observation. The report he filed in our fault system is still available and is now filed under "classics"! Wink

The spikes of radiation and desecration of the pohakuloa area should be of great concern to many island residents. jmo
