RE: The assumed cost of Driving in Hawaii - james weatherford - 02-28-2008 Some factoids from research I did about 5 years ago, regarding driving in Hawaii (data up to 2001): + miles per car: fewer than USA average (islands, not continent, make for less long distance driving) + cars per per person: increasing (cars increasing even faster than people) + miles per gallon of fuel: decreasing (lower fuel efficiency on those newer cars, especially late 1990's through 2001) + fuel use per car: increasing (due to lower MPG) + total fuel increasing (due to lower MPG and more cars). ...cars: love to hate 'em; hate to love 'em. James Weatherford, Ph.D. 15-1888 Hialoa Hawaiian Paradise Park RE: The assumed cost of Driving in Hawaii - loffelkopffl - 02-28-2008 paying at the pump is a good idea but always gets shot down RE: The assumed cost of Driving in Hawaii - Kapohocat - 02-28-2008 quote: Paying at the pump is not a good idea for us!!...unless there is a rebate for it IF you carry your own insurance. SB used about $250 a week in gas. Not because he drives all that much but because the vehicle he needs to pick up materials in does not get the gas mileage that a small sub compact gets. Why should we be penalized? And not to stereo type but small cars seem to think more they can pull out and make that small opening (and we know they dont as seen on Hwy 130 all too often). SB has to be careful and pull out in a large opening because of the size and the weight carried. We pay insurance and besides if the truck got in an accident, the damage would be considerably less (I hope) than the damage to the subcompact. As for the assumption - to be able to make a comparison you have to make certain assumptions so that it is a comparable value which is why stats can be skewed to fit the need. |
