Ohia seeds are being collected in various seed banks around the world. ROD is beginning to look like an extinction level event(which we will recover from). Was Iselle really that long ago?

Extinction level event-You are lead to believe that we'll lose all of our Ohias? [Sad]

the clearing has started on the bottom of the acres

...and WHAT ROAD IS THAT AGAIN?

next move is to call political reps

They won't care, but I'm curious to hear exactly what their excuse is this time.

Nobody official has dared to admit it but reading between the lines, the scientific community is certainly preparing for the worst. Add to that our current lack of a solution or cure, it's not looking good.

I'm not saying it will come to that or not but even if the mortality rate is 90%, still that leaves some survivors who presumably have resistance. What is the mortality rate? I thought it was not 100% and driving through one of the areas hit I saw some live trees among the dead trees.

U o fH is saving ohia seeds, for a possible replanting program in the future:

Researchers at the University of Hawaii's Lyon Arboretum seed conservation lab have been collecting, banking and growing Ohia seedlings to combat Rapid Ohia Death.

Seed Conservation Laboratory Manager Marian Chau says since researchers began collecting Ohia seeds, they've gathered over 2 million from forests on Oahu and the Big Island.

Hawaiian Telcom is in the process of placing high speed internet to many of the under served neighborhoods on the big island. From what a friend told me is that they are placing fiber for all of 10th (Poouli), all of 11th (Pulelehua) and about half of 40th ave. She mentioned that some of these areas are fiber to the home which is going to produce internet speeds that cant be matched. There are many other areas that will be fiber fed also such as Leilani Estates, Fern Forest, Eden Roc, Orchid Land and a few other areas i cant remember. I know this because i always ask her when me and my family can get internet hooked up and have been patiently waiting for them to build in this area. I hope this negative view towards Hawaiian telcoms efforts wont bring any of these projects to a halt. Dish is too expensive and unreliable so i take my kids to their grandparents house or one of my friends house in town where they can use the wifi and do their homework and research for projects. The forest will regrow without a doubt but if we miss out on the chance to have high speed internet that may not ever happen again. I believe THAT is a bigger loss for our community and families.

some of these areas are fiber to the home

I seriously doubt this.

Fiber has been available in HA for years, but at prices which make it cheaper to move to Oahu.

Telcom can't do better than 25Mbit DSL in dense areas of Hilo (read: places with apartment buildings).

Nor does fiber deployment require a new "20 to 30 foot" cut.

Guess I'll wait for the HTH to report on this ... in 2019.
