kalakoa @07:02:22-
Kind of my point.
Thank you. You're OK.

HehHeh, my first post on Punaweb and its about beer. Susan, I beg to differ on the Kirin. I need to look but swear those are like old or skunked batches. Kirin IS a good beer, but these cheep ones they have been selling the past year or so are awful.

Because Hawaii is known for making efficient budget cuts in order to lower taxes, I'm sure this proposal to lower alcohol taxes will definitely sail through.

I have to tip my hat to the folks at Maui Brewing for trying though.

Meanwhile, the State wharfage fees are going up again on 1 October. It's "just" an extra 15%, only "a few dollars more" on your grocery bill.
-----------------
Which then has GET applied to your food purchase... Taxes on taxes. It is the Democrat method.

Actually, I much prefer a good beer to a good wine any day! Keauu Foodland used to sell a brew called Matilda by Goose Island Brewery. It wasn't cheap (about $10 for a 22 oz bottle) but it was out of this world - Belgian Trappist beer. I haven't seen it there for a while though.

I see you with a whiffy brown ale quaff from Tesco snorkin on a cheddar cheese and pickle toastie.

Taxes on taxes.

You also pay GET on the HI-5 "deposit", which deposit is then credited back to the retailer (after the GET has already been paid). Free money!

We have a question - 1st we heard of 15 percent wharf-age fee.Is this tax ( fee ) on honolulu and Hilo or just Hilo.?
If it is both honoruru and hilo that is 30 percent tax ( fee )
Does it apply to only food or every thing including fuels of all grades ?

TomK - Go to Island Naturals in Hilo shopping center and speak with Laura R .She can order you special any type of specialty beer or wine you want world wide and let you know when it is in stock.On Fridays is the 10 percent discount on all alcohol and if you are a senior citizen an additional 10 percent off on most items in store - not fruit n veg and not sale items .

Thanks, Mimosa. I know Safeway was selling Matilda a while ago as well but haven't been there for a while. However, Keaau Foodland has been selling other very good beers, e.g., Black Butte Porter and Dead Guy Ale by Rogue Ales. It's all down to your specific tastes though.

Reviewing the Hawaii Liquor Tax Laws, draft beer already has the lowest tax of any spirit:
"On July 1, 1998, and thereafter, the tax rate shall be:
(1) $5.98 per wine gallon on distilled spirits;
(2) $2.12 per wine gallon on sparkling wine;
(3) $1.38 per wine gallon on still wine;
(4) $0.85 per wine gallon on cooler beverages;
(5) $0.93 per wine gallon on beer other than draft beer;
(6) $0.54 per wine gallon on draft beer;
and at a proportionate rate for any other quantity so sold or used."
It appears the taxes are already adjusted for the percentage of alcohol per drink (not volume of the drink itself) with the exception of draft beer. Favoritism toward draft beer! Wink
