I eat lots of farmers market veggies... Just cook em, peel em, or carefully look over each piece.
Considering all that tax money was spent on "awareness" and they don't even mention it to tourists on the flight in, I'd say the government is being irresponsible. Shocking, I know.

This is why I think in this case a law suit showing the state as negligent in research, awareness, diagnosis, treatment, etc. would help shine some light on the people who are part of the problem here in Hawaii.

If that's how my criticisms are being interpreted, I'll find more productive uses for my time; it's clear that there's more than enough complacency to allow our "elected leaders" to continue their corruption unchecked.
Maybe a few more years of unmanaged growth will make the problems big enough for "most people" to actively care.

No worries, kalakoa, a number of regular posters have unflattering monikers. We have in-house know-it-alls, in-house newbie baiters, in-house cynics.
And in-house "I'm going to post even if I do not have anything worthy to say." (They are in the first to reach 10,000 posts competition.)
I'm pretty sure my moniker isn't flattering either. (Forgot what they gave me right now.)

A University of Hawaii at Hilo researcher was awarded a prestigious fellowship to study the diversity of Hawaii's native bees.
Clearly more important than rat lungworm.

the foundation that awarded the grant focuses on conservation biology, it wouldn't make sense for that money to go toward RLW research

YES Kalakoa.... our endemic Yellow Faced Bees are far more important.. we now have 9 different on the endangered species list.. fwiw our flora and fauna have been on these islands for 40,000 TIMES Longer than a human has.. try for learn about our natural history.....
ps the story smells of major BS! with my job in plant propagation, I touch dozens of semi slugs / week.. every damn week!!! who died from this hype again??? how many have died from Lepto in Hawaii over last hundred yrs?? A = 33

Something sounds fishy to me. Guy claims it was "confirmed parasitic meningitis", but not confirmed of the rat lung worm variety.
How is this possible? Seems like a confirmation would identify the parasite. Sorry, I'm not taking his word for it. An MD who tested/treated him saying that would carry some weight.
