I live at the end of Paradise in HPP and have been scanning the water on my walks and bike rides. No sightings yet but I'll let ya know. My husband's sending the binoculars over.

Almost all my time spent on the islands as a kid was in summer so my first really good look at the Humpbacks was a couple of winters ago while visiting my friend on Maui. Seeing them breach was awesome but by far the coolest thing was how well I could hear them talking when my head was under the water. Wow!

Was lookin' for whales today at the end of Kahakai and saw many honu, and a pair of dolphins swimming toward Hilo...but no whales yet. Our kids are 15 and almost 17 and will be coming next week...we're gonna head over to Hapuna Beach for a day and maybe stop at the port north of there...I hear chances of spotting whales are good there...anyone got any input?

We seen many whales in that area last year, that was in Feb., sometimes we would just pull over on the side the rode and watch them surface. I hope you get to see some.

We spotted a whale yesterday. It was amazing. We went for a hike along the ocean in HPP.

Yeah!!! I was down there twice looking but didn't see one...how lucky was that?! How far off was it? Did it breach? Did you see it's flukes? Thanks for telling us, Jade...Connie tells me she saw plenty of them off of the Hawaiian Beaches side last year...

Hey Jade, how far out was the whale?

So has anyone actually been up around Kawaihai for watching? Also - I was wondering if there is anywhere in Hawi that would be excellent for the whales...I would think you could see Maui real well from there and also the channel where the whales like to play.

It wasn't to far off shore. I am a terrible judge in distance. It was staying just inside of Kaoli point. It was in the same place for a long time. You could see the spray shoot into the air when it would surface. I was just telling my husband that it was whale watching season when no longer than five minutes later we spotted one. Really amazing.

Very cool, Jade. I took a camp chair and sat there at the end of Kahakai late today...no luck yet but I think when we get the kids over to Kawaihai we'll have better luck.

There was a whale spouting about 150 yds (Royalls' gauge of slightly 1 finger below ocean horizon) off of HPP Beach Rd. Park (slightly towards Kaloli Pt.) this afternoon. Cathie & I spotted it first, 3 spouts and a looooong pause, then when Jim & Royall joined us, 3 more spouts & a back showing as it went under the sea! What a wonderful Christmas present ( plus the beautiful day & good friend to visit!)
Aloha all! Carey
