"I think there's a bit of hyperbole in that report from Buck."

My guess is more than just a bit.

"Even the people who left Puna, most are still on island and still using power..."

Some of them are staying in hotels running A/C units they didn't have at home.

No issues with lack of power according to HELCO.

GENERATION

Q: Will you have enough power generation without Puna Geothermal Venture?

A: We have sufficient generation, at this time, to supply the island's energy needs.

Q: What can you say about PGV?

A: Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) is an independent power producer that has sold electricity to Hawaii Electric Light since 1992. It typically provides about 25 percent of the island's electricity. It was shut down after the eruptions began. Hawaii Electric Light still has sufficient power generation available to meet the island's needs.

Q: Will my bill go up because PGV isn't online?

A: We haven't fully evaluated the cost of using other resources, but in the short term, there shouldn't be any noticeable difference to customers. The price of oil is still the primary driver of monthly electric rates.
