Seems that some people quite distant from any flow hazard are beginning to conclude that normal life might not be sustainable....

Logically since PGV is doing ok, it must be the lack of the TMT that Pele is pissed about. The thing that bothers me the most is how many people on TV, including Volcanologists can not pronounce Halema'uma'u correctly.

That would be my conclusion as well. Particularly in a thread titled "Economic Impacts?"

I have long thought that MarkD is not living on the big island and could possibly be a troll.

The eruption is from Kilauea.

It has been ongoing since 1983. Everything else that has happened are from vents along the flanks and rift zones.

Agreed. Look back to the early posts. No clue as to what is reality except what is already posted in other sites.

"I have long thought that MarkD is not living on the big island and could possibly be a troll.....The eruption is from Kilauea."

And 2 slams more added to that.

So the events at Kilauea's Summit , the giant ash cloud, the rocks being thrown out, the cracks in the nearby highway, all of which contributed closure of HVNP--those impacts to the community should not be considered separate from the Leilani episode.

In terms of community impacts? OK.

Each destroyed home saves $20K in cesspool conversion costs, right?

The biggest impact is probably going to be in papaya production. Half the papayas in the state are grown in lower Puna, and nearly all the land for it is either covered, killed by fumes, or at best inaccessible.
