RE: Open letter in support of Maunakea protectors - LazyLehua - 07-21-2019 Bail fund? They were cited and released and back on site within hours. The only people who have been arrested are those who have been arrested at the request of the protectors as they want to keep the area non-violent and peaceful. Thank god you don't try and pawn yourself off as a scientist, eh? And in fact, I kind of think both letters are saying the same thing. But hey, that's my bias, right?" The letters do not say the same thing. The Maunakea Observatories' letter was not a direct response to the students' letter but was prompted by it due to the misinformation and inflammatory language it contained. A direct response was considered a bad idea, but there was a serious concern that the students' letter would provoke some into responding with equally inflammatory language without realizing the harm they would do to the current astronomy community in Hawaii. The students wrote that letter without understanding the nuances of the current situation. RE: Open letter in support of Maunakea protectors - Hunt Stoddard - 07-21-2019 I don't really have a dog in this race, but this letter is typical air-headed SJW nonsense. They're trotting out usually pseudo-intellectual nitwits, like Chanda Prescod-Weinstein. Note how "ask" become "demand" toward the end of the letter. This is embarrassing, immature graduate student activist boilerplate, and should be ignored. And also, they're kibitzing in things they don't understand. |
