No, Frank. Arrogance is when a minority within a minority think they have the right to dictate to everyone else. I experience beauty and inspiration every time I look up there and see those gleaming domes.

I disagree...if one agrees to removal a structure on decommissioning then DO IT...remove IT ...

Lovely photos Tom. Thanks for sharing them. In this one:

The one in the foreground, name I can't recall, always makes me think of the cybermen Smile

Jeremy - thank you and that's the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO). It was the first telescope to be decommissioned (see earlier in the thread). For years, we called it the golfball!

Frank, this topic is about art. If you want to discuss removal of observatories start your own topic please. Don't hijack this topic.

Assume the best and ask questions.

how bout for Arts sake,,,remove the decommissioned units off the mauna and then consider ART for what it is?...

RE: The observatories as art - Rob Tucker - 07-23-2019

That's better. On topic at least.

RE: The observatories as art - kalianna - 07-23-2019

Not to say that the telescopes aren't useful, but speaking strictly about aesthetics, I think they're very ugly. Mounds of concrete with roads and cars is not my idea of beauty. I'd rather see the majesty of an undisturbed mountain or an artist who works with the landscape to create something even more beautiful. (ie Christo).

RE: The observatories as art - Frank - 07-23-2019

so what say you, Rob, to complete removal of decommissioned telescopes?

RE: The observatories as art - Rob Tucker - 07-23-2019

I say start your own topic and don't hijack this one please.
