RE: Hawaii: Message in the Waves (Plastic Waste) - Hawaiibound - 04-28-2008 I'm all for getting rid of plastic bags! I am familiar with the convenience of them, but my convenience fails in comparison to the earth's convenience and needs [] RE: Hawaii: Message in the Waves (Plastic Waste) - Carey - 04-28-2008 TGILL, I worked on a pilot project in the early 90's for full cycle recycling of polystyrene. The process is viable, but was not pursueable with the oil prices of the time. The biggest problem was getting patrons to not mix paper into the 'plastic only' bins at the test Fast Food establishment..... PS is fairly pure hydrocarbon & made for an excellant test. Some plastics have too many binders to make them a feasable full cycle candidate. My faith in humans is that we are too lazy to make it work without alot of handholding, which really adds to the cost. If you have looked into the recycling containers at the transfer stations, you will realize why I doubt anything will work.... people will screw it up (I am unusually pessimistic of my fellow humans right now, as I am in the midst of my senior research on the recreational debris we fling against our coasts, and the damage it does to our marine environment .... At this point, I see us as worse than coachroaches of the earth ....) RE: Hawaii: Message in the Waves (Plastic Waste) - dirk1609 - 04-28-2008 If you live on the BI or just visit it you really must see the beaches north of the green sand beach above south point or easier terms, Kamilo Beach. Every time we go there I get the mixed emotions of extreme sadness and anger. Most people have no idea these beaches are here and they are the dirtiest I have even seen. PILES of plastic, broken glass bottles and fishing net everywhere. This is so bad and has been going on so long that large amounts of plastic has broken down and become part of the beach. The sand is MANY different colors do to all the tiny pieces of plastic. I have MANY pics of this area and even a sad photo of a monk seal resting on a garbage covered beach. Here is a site with pics from a clean up effort http://www.pbase.com/charleswilliam3/beach_cleanup RE: Hawaii: Message in the Waves (Plastic Waste) - mella l - 04-29-2008 Dirk you photos are impressive and the progress amazing. Is this a yearly project the beach clean up at Southpoint and beaches north?? mella l RE: Hawaii: Message in the Waves (Plastic Waste) - gtill - 04-29-2008 Cary, in the late 1960s, a man named Archie Ericsson proposed to the state, a school lunch, complete breakfast and lunch leftovers plus all plates and utensils totally biodegradable and composted seperately! paper plates and wooden utensils (sporks). This would be somthing you can compost and trust what's in it! Otherwise the compost won't be safe for anyone! Your correct about people not sorting, they won't! And unless what you recycle pays off to justify the work, most people won't sort! I think a lot of people visualise a truck coming to your house weekly like back home! With our present tax base, we'll do good to keep a dump running! The Honokaa operation just tried to replace plastic with paper a roadside outlets, I believe Tex's was an originator of it! Are they using plastic containers now? RE: Hawaii: Message in the Waves (Plastic Waste) - dirk1609 - 04-29-2008 Those pictures are not mine. Its a website I found that talks about this beach and the cleanup that I beleive happens every year. It only takes a couple of months for the junk to pile back up. Here are some more pics that I took, many are shortly after a clean up. http://s294.photobucket.com/albums/mm117/derek1609/?action=view¤t=9ff5b379.pbw RE: Hawaii: Message in the Waves (Plastic Waste) - dirk1609 - 05-01-2008 Just on this forum you can see why this is a problem. Its just not a big deal for most people. More people have read the post on nude cruises. More than three time the amount of people have read the post on a local football team. I bet if there was a post on the best place to get a big screen TV more people would read and reply to that. EFFFING Dogs has almost 11 pages of posts. This thread on the health of our ocean is going away fast. The dogs in Hawaii are a HUGE issue however the trashing of our ocean makes the dog issue nothing at all. Ill be sure to bump it to the top every couple of days. Please people look into this issue and if you are in a place where you can make a difference please do so. If you haven't seen these beaches above south point PLEASE DO SO and haul out some trash. If you need directions let me know, you will need a 4 wheel drive with some extra clearance. The Earth is NOT our door mat to better and fancier things. |
