RE: pets travelling to Hawaii in cabin - punagirl - 06-03-2008 I just flew Delta from Atlanta to Los Angeles with one of my dachshunds in the cabin, no problem. Size matters - they have to be able to fit "sorta" under the seat. My dog is a miniature, about 10.5 lbs. We just got one of those "Paris Hilton" carriers, made it comfy with blankets and enjoyed the ride. It was her first flight and my first time flying with a dog so I was a bit tense at first. It went fine. She was a bit fidgity in the airport and nobody said much when I took her out & held her. Once we were on the plane she was fine. I think the hum of the engine kind of soothed her. It's a 4 hr flight and that was about her max for being cooperative. Oh yeah, it is $80 each way for the dog. No amount of schmoozing would help with the fare. She didn't get flier miles (I thought they should have put them on mine!). There are only two pets per cabin per flight so you need to confirm when you book your flight. I do know that these are the general rules for most airlines but they can change them as they please! Atlanta/Pahoa RE: pets travelling to Hawaii in cabin - Robin C - 06-04-2008 Its been a couple years since I brought my cat and dog over. At that time no airline would let you bring any (non-service) pet in the cabin from the mainland to Hawaii. Inter-island was okay. Even if policies say they are allowed in cabin....check, check and double check. They probably mean to all places other than Hawaii. That was my experience. The good news is that if your kitty does have to fly in baggage, he/she will likely be just fine. My pets were a little peeved at the long crate time but, ultimately, I was way more stressed than they seemed to be. Good luck. I stand by what I said. But since nasty trolling is uncontrollable on this forum ,I am not participating in the troll circus. This thread is way too important to me.I would like to step out and hear the facts about the animals from Dogtravel arranged flights being processed by quarantine services.(Flight tail#,dates, other details).I had some help in investigating this.May be someone has better sources.. RE: pets travelling to Hawaii in cabin - Les C - 06-04-2008 Like Robin, when we flew over from CA, our two cats and one small cockatoo travelled in cargo in medium-sized dog carriers, each. We would have preferred that they travelled in the cabin, but it was not possible and they would have to travel in really small carriers so they could go under the seats. They all made the trip in good shape. As with Robin, we were more stressed than our cats and bird. If you end up flying them over in cargo, you should check out the restrictions for the time of year that you'll be travelling. All(?) airlines have restrictions during the hotter summer months. RE: pets travelling to Hawaii in cabin - Bullwinkle - 06-04-2008 http://www.thirdamendment.com/animals.html a good read before deciding on airlines to ship your pets RE: pets travelling to Hawaii in cabin - leilaniloo - 06-08-2008 Thanks to all for your responses. I guess I will use cargo and take a couple of tranquilers --for myself! In the future, I will set up a letter campaign to attempt to convince the airlines to change their policy--which is no pets in cabin when going TO HAWAII, though most allow FROM Hawaii) I can set it up an online form that any of you who might want to join me could fill out. mahalo Jane RE: pets travelling to Hawaii in cabin - gtill - 06-09-2008 What you're up against is the quarantine of dogs coming into Hawaii. For a good reason(rabies) dogs are still required to go through a maze of vet authorizations, shots, chip etc. It's not near as bad as it used to be with the Quarantine of 4 months on Oahu, but still the door is not open wide to any dogs. To allow carry on would be very slack! Some of us think the quarantine should still be in effect! |
