You are all wandering off the farm again...

Let’s talk about Puna price increases, and the Puna inflation rate.  Or rather, your own personal inflation rate.  It doesn’t matter what numbers the government churns out, or you wish to believe - - if you don’t buy the stuff.

When the price of one source of protein increases, you can generally buy another that’s more affordable.  As Rob mentioned, buy non wood products instead of wood.  Most of the time if you’re willing you can either substitute one product for another, or not buy something that’s gone way up in price.

Another possibility is grow your own garden, indoor sprouts, even do your own yard maintenance.  Most people could keep their personal inflation rate far below whatever the official rate is if they’re willing to adjust their lifestyle.

My own personal Puna inflation rate skyrockets when I eat popcorn and drink beer.

Im wondering how anyone can survive in Hawaii based on just social security. Between these food prices and property taxes and all the other expenses people have it seems like a pretty bad deal. Sum negative.

I've long wondered how anyone can survive in Hawaii without a job that includes guaranteed raises to keep up with the cost increases.

That implies you have a job that guarantees the cost of living pay increases. Many of us don't have that guarantee. You must be special.

Lots of people do it. You just have to adjust your expectations and living style. I guess if your chakra can handle it and the planets are aligned with your crystals, it's a great place to live.

I get a chuckle when I hear people complaining about the property taxes here.  For owner-occupied homes, Hawaii has the lowest property tax rate in the nation.  When we moved here, our prop tax was less than half of what we were paying on the mainland.  Our car insurance was about a third of what we were paying.  That will buy a whole lot of expensive food.

Exactly Kali, my property taxes are $100 per annum.

"beef prices jumped by 32% in the quarter, with chicken up ~20% and pork 13%."

No, but my taxes fund those jobs. Think HGEA.

For owner-occupied homes, Hawaii has the lowest property tax rate in the nation.

The catch is: you have to live here and be subject to all the other government dysfunction. Some people aren't bothered by this.
