The domestic cultivar around here just needs 20ish minutes of cooking. It's a must-have, easy staple crop for anyone interested in growing their own food. Pahoa Urban Food Forest (PUFF) hosts events the second Sunday of each month, exploring various aspects of permaculture and living sustainably with the land. Each event includes a discussion, a tour of our developing food forest & our perennial edibles, and free keiki of useful plants. This month: Saving seed "correctly" can feel intimidating, requiring large population sizes and isolation distances. Yet seeds from mainland companies often grow poorly, and even seeds from elsewhere in Hawai'i may not thrive in your microclimate or with your growing techniques. Joseph Lofthouse's "adaptation agriculture" celebrates & mixes up genetic diversity, selects for your habits & site pressures, and boosts success. The result: tasty, productive crops well adapted to your preferences & location, with less stress and more joy for you & your plants! Learn more at goingtoseed.com, and join us to discuss applying the concepts in Hawai'i. DAY: Sunday, November 10 DISCUSSION: 11 AM til noon: Adaptive seed saving TOUR: noon til 1, with time to chat or wander more afterwards. RE: Food forest tours & keiki giveaways - Pahoa - norrist - 02-07-2025 Learn why "I found an air potato!" is a catchphrase wherever it's grown! One of the easiest staple foods, this prolific perennial carbohydrate is used like potatoes, but without needing digging to harvest and replant. A deciduous vine, air potatoes can grow on feed trees, on trellises, or amongst and on shrub and tree crops. This is a must-have for food gardens and homesteads. (Read more at https://farmerscrub.blogspot.com/2018/06/air-potato-dioscorea-bulbifera.html ) We'll talk about domesticated air potatoes (Dioscorea bulbifera) and how amazing they are, see some specimens, and taste cooked samples. We'll have lots of the common "Hawai'i" variety to take home for planting and eating. We'll also have a mini-celebration of mint potatoes, a deciduous ground cover and root & leaf crop.
