This was the most quiet Fourth in the entire 20 years that the Frau and I have lived in central HPP. The "usual suspects" set off some heavy stuff between 20:00 and 22:30, but nothing like past years. Was this a fluke, or are the new enforcement measures putting a damper on things? If the latter, that would be a very new concept in a place were regulations are frequently legislated and then never enforced.

Maybe the allure of spending hundreds of dollars, and not the current counterfeit hundreds of dollars still floating around, on cheap Chinese pyrotechnics is no longer the cool thing to do?

Agreed Chunkster. Our dog was still terrified of course but people generally kept to legal fireworks in the allotted time frame. Didnʻt hear a peep after 10 pm. Weʻll see what happens this weekend.

Agree all, same lesser experience, maybe 25% of what was usual in the past and same respectful time frame. Maybe two nearby with big aerials as opposed to 20-25 or so usually all around.
Guessing that it's partly lack of inventory raising the price of the illegals (from confiscating tons of them), and, the recent push for enforcing the laws, and encouraging everyone to report their neighbors, etc.
There is also a somewhat tough economy for many stretching those hard earned dollars thinner, making these firework toys more of a nice extra than before perhaps.

Yes, much quieter in my part of HA too.
When they're really intense, they make me think of distant gunfire and explosions too. I have to imagine that's part of the point. Or maybe just to prove to ourselves and others that the average American is willing to set off cheap, dangerous explosives for the sake of their country?
