Let me explain to you Patricia, my (and my husband's) mindset.

We came to Hawaii in 1988. We came to find peace and solitude and build our eventual retirement home which we did.

We did not come here to change anything. As such, since 1/1/1990 when we became official Hawaii residents, we have NEVER ONCE voted for or gotten involved with any form of "local" politics in any way shape or form whatsoever.

Having said that, we volunteered and helped through numerous issues facing everyone here like right after moving here the Kalapana lava flows - even taking in a local couple who lost everything. Various hurricanes. The 2018 lava flows that decimated so many. 

We did not come here to make Hawaii ours but to make us Hawaii. 

That all being said, I get really frustrated and angry at the prevailing mindset of "I can come to Hawaii and be and do whatever the hell I want, but no one else can" which is the exact premise of this thread. That's pretty goddamn vile when you think about it.

The 70ish year olds complaining on this thread, when they came here at 18 - 20 years old, I am quite sure pissed off a whole bunch of 70 year old mainland transplanted Caucasians - and a whole bunch local Hawaiians as well.

As Moderator 2 once said on another thread:

"Live and let live!"

Is that what Sam Sonn is saying? I did not take that meaning away from their post. What I thought they were saying is that they feel there needs to be a balance. That there are people who come to Hawaii and they want BIG changes (so much more) and they want it right now- to hell with planning. And then there are those who are the other extreme and they want NO changes- leave the aina alone, do NOTHING.

Unfortunately, Hawaii is no longer as it was 60 years ago, or even 20 years ago. There is no way to stop the continued growth and population surge. Hawaii's infrastructure is sad, and NEEDS HELP. Parks, mailboxes, resorts, I understand why some want these things. Undeveloped land, protected shoreline, protected plants and animals, cultural sites, and more. I understand why these are very important too. BUT if we do little to nothing about improving our infrastructure and keeping our land safe from sewage run-off, or contaminated water, if we do not make and KEEP our roads safe, then we all lose.

We all need to do better. There is no choice as to whether change will happen, ii is inevitable. But we do have choices as to how that should come about and what we should prioritize first.

So, YOU came to fix everything that YOU think is WRONG with Hawaii?

I'm quite sure places like Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, heck - Baltimore, Portland, Denver, there are so many places with so many more infrastructure problems than this little Podunk town of Hilo/Pahoa that could clearly use your help. 

At any event, while you are free to turn this thread into everything Patricia as you have so many others, I would suggest a big thing to help in a long way towards improving Hawaii's infrastructure, especially inside of HPP, is to welcome with open arms 8,000 mailboxes that once operational will keep 13,000 plus residents from having to drive to Pahoa, Keaau or even Hilo just to get their mail. And when you consider, in the grand scheme of things, the cost to the HPP resident is pennies on the dollar, as well as to the lightening of traffic on all of Hawaii's roads, including HPP's own roads thus reducing the unnecessary road repairs all around, that would be a very good way to help Hawaii's "sad" infrastructure.

Or you can tie up everything basically arguing over what the equivalent of the definition of the word "is" is.

Now, I for one would surely love to really understand just what the hell Sam Son is discussing here, as outside of it sounding like an old man yelling at some young kids for riding their bikes on his lawn, I have no clue what he is talking about. And no offensive Obie, your take did not really shed much light on whatever the subject matter here is.

I did not come here to "fix" everything Hawaii. But I do live here, and infrastructure is important.

How is my responding to a thread turning everything into it being about me?  I am not the only one commenting. Again, the PW clique circling and looking for blood.

When I moved to Hawaii in 1987, one night I watched a PBS Hawaii program for a half hour or whatever we could spare from our 6 solar panel, deep cell battery power system at the ends of the earth on Maui.

I remember an elderly Native Hawaiian gentleman (probably younger than I am now) being interviewed.  Can’t recall the question put to him but his reply was something along the lines of:

… the haoles come here and think they should be the last one let in.  Close the door. Leave everything like it was when they arrived.  Then he threw up his hands, smiled, and chuckled loudly.

Some things never do change!

I'm a developing hippie with an I-phone who supports the improvements you've described.  Well, from a distance.  I haven't been to Kehena in some time.
