Kids on KP duty

Boomer here.  I mowed the lawn since I was 9 years old.  Raked a full yard of leaves in the fall for a shiny Kennedy 1/2 dollar.  Had a paper route.  Collected used newspaper and sold it for pennies a pound.  Grew gourds and sold each bushel basket full for $1.00.

I walked a mile to school, yes in the snow.

Grew up with the adage “there’s no such thing as a free lunch.”  As well as another saying in that era, generally used by the big kids who may have been held back a grade, “give me your lunch money.”  This was because school lunches were not a free lunch, there was no such thing, which created an innovative entrepreneurial spirit among the smaller students who received A and B grades on their report cards.  They wanted to buy their lunch and needed their lunch so formulated work arounds.  Like “decoy” brown paper lunch bags so the big bullies would think they brought lunch, wouldn’t buy lunch, and therefore had no change.  Or organizing a playground group defense that outnumbered the bullies, with a side benefit that included discussion of the previous night’s Twilight Zone.  Then there was the athletic approach, always staying 2 steps ahead.

Great companies from the ‘80’s onward were helmed by CEOs who had started life with a paper route and who learned to navigate lunch money obstacles so they never went hungry.  Unless later in life while creating personal computers, internet businesses, the Palm Pilot, DiscMan, cell phones, or tackling one insurmountable problem after another they simply forgot to eat.

Where does that leave subsequent generations, who have benefited from these boomer struggles and innovations?  With million dollar proposals to create a free lunch rather than throw away perfectly good food?  Is it really a waste of money to provide our children with food?  Maybe we could divert the billions of dollars blowing up children in other countries to the fund?  The billions and billions that Hawaii taxpayers paid part of and which accomplished nothing, other than loss on all sides.

If we’re going to throw money away, maybe we could use some to stop throwing away food?

Your post has a familiar weave to it Edge, and I can completely relate to it right down to the paper route. If you're saying that, by giving today's children an easier lunch situation than Baby Boomers had, we can prevent a future where they blow up the children in subsequent generations, the way that baby boomers have in the last 1/2 dozen wars and military actions, then I personally wouldn't care how much this Oahu egg cracking facility costs.  I'm with you.  I'm for feeding the children anyways. Bullying affects the aggressor, the victim, and everyone in the group in deep and long-lasting ways.  I just never connected it with war but it does make perfect sense. Feed those kids. Heck, let's get Mark Glick, Hawaii's OHA trained, Boomer Cheif Energy Officer and fossil fuel advocate, to whip up one of his creative proforma spreadsheet/reports. The thing will sail right through. No brainer.  I wish we could go back in time and give Boomers some nutritious free lunches. Can you think of any other way to prevent Boomers from blowing up children? All of the Boomers with their fingers on the buttons have done it. The bullying always comes home to roost, doesn't it?  And you're right, if we had all of the kala that Baby Boomers have wasted blowing up children, we could probably feed all of the surviving children, plus give them all a discman, a copy of Sgt. Peppers, a Coke, and a smile.

All of the Boomers

Yes, All The Boomers. Why compare and contrast when you can save a step and simply compare? My socks say For Size 6-12. I show the label to my feet but half the time they’re not buying it.

Read:  "with their fingers on the buttons".

Did boomers invent socks?

Did boomers invent socks?

Did you know before the advent of socks, before hard soled shoes, most humans walked on the front of their foot? It was a survival mechanism. If they stepped first on their heel, they would press down hard on any sharp object, rock, stick, bone, thorn, and puncture their skin leading to possible infection. By stepping first on the front of the foot, any sharp object could be detected quickly and provided a faster reaction time from that position to pull back before it penetrated the skin. It was also quieter to walk in that manner, during a time when silence might mean survival from unknown encounters.

Stop electing them. Over and over. And impeach the one(s) who say they won't ever start a war but then start a war.

I guess I didn't know it was a thing for most humans.  I do know I walk on the front of my feet in certain situations. Thanks for that interesting history!

In an effort to responsibly tie it all together and bring the thread back to its origins in a serious way, did you know that if you put an egg in a sock and spin it around really fast for an ample amount of time, and then boil it, you're supposed to get a boiled scrambled egg?  Or, so they say...

Enjoy the, ahem, beat.
