I think of every million dollar study the county mulls up, and every multi-million dollar handout to "solve homelessness", and it seems the money would be better spent paying for food security, education, and healthcare.  The benefits should only apply to children and those living here longer than 5 years or paying state income tax, so we don't get a bunch of freeloaders moving here to take advantage.

Seriously, Random.  You're on a roll!

Yak: It looks like the socialists are already here, all around us.

Like totally man.  I can't understand why the people whinging in this thread are getting their "feefees" (thanks for letting me borrow that one) hurt by this article.  Even the red-hatards in Hawaii are half socialist. Why all of this drama?

IMHO, the article, is just informing readers, quite appropriately, that Hawaii so far, has blissfully dodged the bullet that any honest, informed person, is very aware that "the party" is currently struggling to avoid.

Durian Fiend: ...so called Democratic Socialist -whatever that means...

Here ya go - https://www.dsausa.org/  They are working diligently to take over an existing party.

Everyone needs to read that entire article !
It pretty much explains why Tam lost too.
Hawaii is pretty much middle of the road and Republicans and Democrats kind of blend together.
Harry Kim was a Republican.

I don't know anything about any of that... but me.. in the here and now.. thinks selfishness is f*cked. And any system that encourages it should be scrapped. And, ya know, good ol' capitalism is right up there with the best of 'em. What a bunch of crock.. to think grabbing your's while screwing someone out of their's is anything but evil. It's a shame.

Private, for profit, health insurance is a perfect example.

Seriously, it is a simple fact that the better educated and the healthier we are the better a society we would have. So, why are we not investing everything we have to achieve those two things for everyone?

It is also a simple fact that in my entire life one political party, the Democrats, have tried to achieve that while the other, the Republicans have done all they can to prevent that from happening. And yeah, the current, most recent batch of elected Democratic politicians have done nothing. They let all this crap happen.. they've been useless, and should be swapped out for more aggressive get it done already people that will outlaw the crap MAGA has done to this country.

There is no excuse for it. None. And, in fact, by my measure the Republican Party, and their support for corporate profit over humanity, is sick. Is truly a real mental and emotional, a spiritual sickness. It's, by every definition of the term, evil.

MyMan! - I don't know anything about any of that...

Then we can forgive your earlier outbursts.  Many people don't know anything about so much.

MyManao - I think it's the hat's fault. Gotta be, right? Otherwise, our education system has completely failed us. And that can't be so, can it?
Well one party has a long history of cutting funding for education. Apparently they love the uneducated, probably for reasons of personal gain.

But maybe it is the hats, which are actually Cronenberg-esque parasites that attach deep into the wearer's amygdala and instructs them what to fear - people who are different are vermin (even mongoose or ferret like), free buses are scary (Hele-On still free till December 31, 2028), feeding kids at school is evil (but can be tasty will plenty locally grown items), the communists are coming (maybe to rebuild Hawaii's labor protections like before?), etc. And the hats are part of a coordinated hive mind that goes all the way up to the presidency. Pretty good plot - someone should write it down!

Punatang - Even the red-hatards in Hawaii are half socialist. Why all of this drama?
Oh sure - Conservative Socialists, Democratic Socialists, Left Libertarian Socialists, all sorts of mix plate politics figuring out how to spend the collective's monies. The drama seems to be the Star-Advertiser trying to shoehorn in Hawaii's Democratic primaries into a large national narrative about DSA candidates, of which apparently we had none. Maybe just a whole buncha nonsense, but all the comments on how lucky Hawai'i is to have dodged the rise of Socialism are plenty entertaining!

Star-Advertiser trying to shoehorn in Hawaii's Democratic primaries into a large national narrative about DSA candidates

It’s not difficult to read the article to see whether the label fits the package.

Did any of the candidates in the Star Advertiser article call themselves DSA?  Or will that label get readers on their website to click for more (advertising)?  As unfortunate as that that is true, it would be even worse if people don’t click through, because they won’t read the article that disproves the headline, but will still think that one sentence headline has informed them on the subject matter.  It did inform them, but incorrectly.  It could even lead someone who is a one sentence reader, or a person who reads without comprehension to post the misleading story on Punaweb, continuing the dumbing down of Hawaii.

Here’s another example of why you should read with comprehension, slowly if necessary. Was Tulsi Gabbard a Democrat?  Or did she understand that labeling herself a Democrat is how you get elected in Hawaii?  If you voted for her and thought you were getting a Democrat, then like Rick in the movie Casablanca, who came to Morocco for the waters, in the desert, it’s only later, much later, that you discover you were misinformed.
