Plain coffee at Starbucks is $1.75 a cup (cheaper than most restaurants charge).....not $5.00. Mocha's and latte's and fraps are more expensive no matter what coffee shop you go to.

Another nice thing about Starbucks in Borders is they totally don't care if you're spending money there. You can hang out for as long as you want. Very few restaurants or cafes can you do that ... that's what makes it such a nice meeting place, no pressure at all to spend money.
I can see why they might not be making much profit there, with that approach. [

I heard Starbucks may be starting a new policy in all their participating stores. "Free" 2 hour wireless internet connections. Right now they have wireless connections for laptops but they cost up to $10.00 per day...not sure if they have an hourly rate.
But the free 2 hour blazing fast connection is really nice especially if you don't have to buy anything. Actually you don't even have to be in the store to get the signal. Just close to it. I may even just cancel my home internet once this comes about and use it every few days to check email and of course post on puna web[

][][][][]Yippee!! I just realized I dont need to move soon! I swore (I know it's like saying never) I was moving to Mexico when Starbucks came to Pahoa! The chances of Starbucks being in Pahoa is much slimmer now!

Borders allows you to just go in and read there books for free! They even provide the chairs near many of the book racks...
(Please pardon my ignorance of the Hilo one as I haven't been there, my experience was on Oahu, Kuhio Avenue.)
Starbucks announced yesterday that they were closing 616 stores nationwide. The 616 is 16 more stores then they originally planned of 600.

well, Damon, that's why I said "Starbucks in Borders" and not "Starbucks." [

Damon, I worked in restaurants for years, and none of them want you to bring in outside food. If you want to combine their drink with a sandwich from somewhere else, then you are supposed to order it to go and consume it off premises.
That said, I was told there when I said I wanted something not-sweet to eat, to go next door and get something if I wanted. I didn't, but only because it's ingrained in me not to do that; I noticed a few people were.
I'm amazed at how people who don't use the Hilo Borders-Starbucks are so convinced that it's corporate evil at work -- it really is a great place to unwind, and lots of the patrons live in Puna ... (overheard conversations)
I'm not so bummed that it won't be a Starbucks any more, but we went through 2-3 months last time it closed and noisy construction, so yeah, I'm bummed to be losing my chill out place when in town.

Starbucks is closing around 600 stores in the US they announced. They grew too fast and now with the economy downturn they have to close down their least productive/expensive stores....
