RE: Gumbo - hikatz - 09-07-2008

I am sorry, losing a pet that has become part of the family is still difficult. Even when they are in pain, the trust they have for you is incredible and their will is so strong that they don't let go until it's time. But we have the memories, and they know they were loved! Gumbo's will was strong because of your love!

RE: Gumbo - Kapohocat - 09-07-2008

Pam, I am sorry for your loss. I can still remember the hot sunny day in Cali when my Tammy dog died (a lab-cocker mix) when I was about 22 and she was 14.

Gumbo is in dog heaven (in my country) which consists of plenty of people petting them, lots of toys to play with and bones to bury, and no cats to harass them!

RE: Gumbo - kani-lehua - 09-07-2008

ah, pam! sorry to hear about gumbo. sounds like he had good parents. now, what is it with beagle mixes? my purebred beagle, whitney, died at 16 years old. i have another beagle/besenji mix who is going on 19. yep, 19!!! she's not in any pain, is not senile, but is going deaf and blind and is becoming a picky eater.

i feel for you. just lost my cat, star, back in july after nursing her for about 6 weeks. she passed from kidney failure. now i have another handicapped/gereatric cat that has thyroid problems and is on medication. argh!

hi Pam, thank you for sharing! I just now read this sad news ... I thought the topic was literally about gumbo, how to cook, where to find good gumbo ...[Big Grin]

I have yet to go through the experience of a beloved pet dying from age or being put to sleep. I have come home to find my beautiful cat ripped to shreds by a vicious dog that had been ordered restrained, but the other cats I've lost have disappeared and I've mourned them in absentia. Still a loss, but different.

(I've lost koi and pet rats to illness, and I cried, but it was not like losing a faithful friend.)

I admire the way you've learned to accept and process it all. Wishing you the best, and may I have as much wisdom when my time comes!

btw, there's a Jimmy Buffett song called "I Will Play for Gumbo" that is a very up song. You might enjoy listening to it in memoriam.

Okay. Tell me why Gumbo had to live outside.

RE: Gumbo - mella l - 09-07-2008

I remember visiting the ranch in 2005, no house, no road, not a person in sight. Gene and I approached by the top gate close to the fruit orchard. Here he came running, spry, barking and doing his protection thing with so much vim and vigor. It was a dog ? it was a plane ? no it was super GUMBO his fine studly self, barking his heart out, that is until he heard Pam say all was Ok! So he was ready for a petting then!

So now I will remember saying good night to Gumbo. He who has had the 9 lives of any house cat! He barked at the wall in the middle of the night, he grumped at Sandy in all her enthusiasm, even in his dotage he still stood up to the pigs, and he would get out of bed each evening for his bed time, three or four milk bones and take Sandy's if he could muster it.

Aloha nui loa to Gumbo and Pam and Bob our understanding and sincere sympathy. Pam and Gene

RE: Gumbo - wyatt - 09-07-2008

Pam and Bob you both know that the love we share with the pets that put up with us, is well deserved.
Rest assured that Gumbo is waiting and guarding a place where he will see you again.
Sorry for the loss in your family.

KathyH...

Gumbo was names such because of the Jimmy Buffett song. i did PR work for a Buffett Cover Band named KOKOLOCO and the singer JERRY GONTANG was learning the song for a stage show. He used to come over and sing to me and he was singing the day after we got the dog... and there it was. GUMBO.

He would incorporate little asides to the dog in the songs.... "I WILL PLAY FOR GUMBO...WHERE IS THAT LITTLE DOGGIE??" It was a hoot.
