I've also heard of problems with speed bumps where people brake sharply before them, and then roar off once they're past.
A little less speed, much more noise.

And, if you live on the street with the speed bumps and have to travel them every day coming and going, it is very frustrating!
We had to travel over only 2 bumps in a mainland neighborhood! I hated it! I believe you would not like it either! [xx(]

We wanted speed bumps back on the mainland, but the fire department was strongly opposed. They wanted to be able to speed on our street also.

After you keep paying for wheel alignments, new shocks, etc., you'll reconsider the desire for speed bumps.

So how DO you stop the speeders? (or slow them down). Leaving the roads unpaved certainly has an affect, but everyone wants paved roads? Right? I was talking to someone when I was shopping for land and commented about the rough roads. He said he liked them that way, it keeps the tourists and sightseers away and no speeders.

Not everyone in HPP wants paved roads, and they have various reasons for not wanting them. Back before the paving began there were discussions and testimony on this subject given at Association meetings. Some worried about speeding of course. Some people complained that paved roads would destroy what remains of the rustic appeal of HPP. (One woman with this point of view almost had a nervous breakdown of some sort while speaking and then heckled other speakers who disagreed with her.) Other people questioned the ability of the association to successfully manage such a big project, given past fiascoes with resurfacing the main roads to the highway. At one point a few years ago HPPOA was put into receivership under court supervision due to chronic mismanagement.
Ironically, no one questioned the ability to pave all the roads with the funds available from the bond issue. It turns out the cost estimates were wildly optimistic, and this is what ended up being the biggest bugaboo. Apathy and low participation a HPPOA meetings has resulted in a surprisingly large number of property owners who still do not know that all the roads are not being paved. We had a block party two weekends ago, and there were folks there who asked when the road would be paved. They were shocked to learn that it won't be, at least not for a very long time. When I suggested that these people needed to attend some meetings, I got a blank stare.
And so it goes. I attend most of the meetings and frequently participate, but until more stakeholders get active, there will more muddling through than strategic planning.
