We also came on United when we brought our 80 lbs dog in XL crate from Denver in April. It costs $200 to fly as a checked luggage on United from Denver to HNL, another $100 on Aloha Airline (air-cargo) to Hilo. We had Jackie and Winston handling our dog during the the transfer in HNL. They are the best.

The chart of recommended carrier sizes on that page may be helpful though. When we brought our 110 or 120 pound dog over 2001, the cost was about $200. Can't remember the carrier though - United, Delta? I do remember
we almost missed our flight after standing in line with Kia to check in and then being told we had to drive her over to cargo. I'd check those airlines Websites and their cargo pages though. And if your wife can't get more than a scripted answer from the reservationist tell her to ask for the supervisor, and they'll usually go up a tier to the next level of support. Also I learned the hard way to check back with another one just to make sure. (We just flew over this time with 3 cats so lots of checking was involved..we were told at first by ATA we could bring them all on in the passenger cabin and then calling back to pay for my tickets I double checked and found out that it's one per passenger so that didn't work out). Yes, and be sure to check on temperature regulations.
It shouldn't be bad this time time of year, but when it's too hot or cold it can be a no fly. With the cold weather, some airlines will let them on if they're acclimated to the cold and you have a note from the vet, but they're picky about the wording. The problem with the cold isn't in the plane they told me but out on the tarmac.
Anyway, just double check everything and hope you can bring them both. When I saw the thread title Flying Big Dogs, I wanted to look up at the sky RFLOL

HADave I don't know if Delta meets the timing requirements you have but their rates for dogs

You need a morning flight to avoid paying Quarantine to keep them overnight in HNL?
And it will be so much less stressful for them to get off the plane and go with you.
There's also a Website on flying with animals that lists the airlines with the best pet safety records and such as well as tips for helping them be less stressed, like giving the dog a tshirt you've worn for a couple days, and that kind of thing. Ayuh, Dave when we moved we drove to San Francisco shipped the vehicle from oakland and flew the dog on Hawaiian Air. It was before the new release program so he had to stay in HNL. We walked over to the quarantine station to be sure he arrived ok. Very sad leaving him behind. He has everything ready this time for the early release. I would bypass HNL and fly to Kona. HA has a lot more flights from west coast directly to Kona.I had trouble getting a large crate ended up at Pet Quarters to find the right size crate. I do know HA has size restrictions for wt. to be on the same flight as you but you could check with them, I think we paid $90 for him.I know I will fly directly to Kona to avoid the hassle at HNL> very good idea to rent the van though. Remember you are going to arrive long before the vehicles do. We are getting closer Dave cant wait

Woah, tonight 8:42 EDST Totally burnt have been packing boxes and loading the container diligently since Friday. Today was electronics day so now I have to work from the laptop that I can't see until I cabled into our 42" plazma Woah ...Can Yah See Me Now......short cable so I'm sitting within a couple feet of the screen it all feels like a Tool Time Episode..... Yah know these things put out some heat! Nothing compared to the container though 110 degrees in there today......Strange for ending Sept in Maine with colored foliage and 90 degree heat....
Getting away from the topic.....Flying Large Dogs is what I tell the girls when jets fly overhead during the day....I think it helps them

Hooligal your link for direct to Kona seems to be having problems or is not available anymore?? Sure would like to know more about that possibility did I understand that a direct release is not available in Kona and a 5 day min with vet is the deal?
Jackie and Winston do they have a set price for all or is it per pet and by size??
I presume there are pull carts to shuffle the crates from place to place, around the airports, or do you just drag them..... Ethel gets kind of concerned when you push her nest around

I got to tell you all everyone will simply fall in love with Ethel, for her size she is the sweetest animal you've ever met and loves a good petting so much, she leans right into you nearly pushing you aside. Her coat is so velvety soft that you just want to hug her and hug her.....Aline I'm so sorry for not keeping closer in touch things being the way they are I am afraid to forget my focus, consequently friends and family have not been where they should be in the realm of things.
I'm excited for you and who knows we might be arriving close to each other although I'm sure you will probably be first. We get on bended knees and keep crossed fingers constantly.....please please please lol : ) Keep in touch when you can....

It looks like it is a MAX stay of 5 days in Kona, but possibly faster if everything is in order. It's not direct release. I bet you could ask the Vet in Kona to get a better idea of how quickly they usually release the pets.

Pick up a couple of push carts when you get off the plane, before you head to quarantine. They cost something...a dollar or so. There are no carts at quarantine. The other option I've read about it hiring a taxi (big one) to get you and the pups to the different areas of the airport.
The Kona quarantine sounds great, but I haven't read (here or on konaweb) of anyone doing it successfully. There may still be issues of the right people at Ag and the right people at the airlines knowing that its allowed and what the process is. If you go that route (and it sounds like it has it benefits) do extra, extra, extra homework.

Although the state is trying to relocate quarantine for easy of pick up, my understanding it is a hard place to find. It takes about a 10 minute walk to get there with your carts.
I would suggest to the PQB that they put foot print painted markers for easy of just finding the place, even people who have rented a taxi to get there have real problems locating the spot. We had decided for this reason and convenience to use Jackie and Winston, have them pick up the pets and meet them at the airline check in for the second leg of the flight.
Robin was the quarantine office easy for you to find??
