I remember talking to someone on this board and this sticks in my mind.
The current version of the UBC will automatically become code (statewide) 18 months after being published unless adopted earlier. Each County can adopt the latest revisions anytime after being published but at the 18 month mark, it becomes automatic.

check out eden roc. i have a some friends in the area and it a place where you can build whatever you wish. i really like the area. you can get a lot for 10,000 if you search hard enough.

I was looking primarily for a direct link to building codes to assist in design. Finding the right land is secondary at the moment, but we were looking for something "towards the mountains". Any suggestions about land location? I'll also look a little more extensively in the forum for some of my other answers. [8D]

Well, Carey gave you the link to the building codes. I don't really understand how they will help you design your house unless you've got some really outlandish concept that you want to check out.
How close to top of the mountain did you want to get? Fern Forest has 3-acre lots at 1900-2600 ft elevation. Eden Roc has one acre lots at 1700-1900'. Fern Acres has 2-acre lots & is just downslope at 1300-1600. Hawaiian Acres with 3-acre lots ranges down to 700'. Below that are Orchidland and then HPP down to the water. The only other acre-size lots I'm aware of are Leilani Estates, which is fairly high-priced, and Royal Gardens which has FRESH lava (still moving!) and no road access.
If you could formulate specific questions, we're all pretty glad to answer.

We were actually looking at a site on Eden Roc, go figure. Heard about the lava flows and after checking some of the information, it doesn't look etirely dangerous in that area... but it seems to be close to Pu'u o'o? Thats also a level 3 lava zone right?

Wow! It IS close to Pu'u O'o! I hadn't actually looked at that relationship before. It's only 5.25 miles to the nearest corner Eden Roc, but over 9 to the entrance. It's 8 miles from my lot in Ohia Estates.

If you want some serious mauka the lots at the back of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates (aka HOVE) are way up there in elevation. I'm guessing three to four thousand feet. Great for astronomers.

Kani-Lehua: You're certainly right. Most lots in RHE and Ohia Estates are front + back. I'm much more familiar with OE, and even a front & back pair of typical lots wouldn't be an acre. (I was thrilled to find PAVED COUNTY ROAD and CABLE!

Why would anyone who wanted dry wind-swept bare lava as remote as possible from the rest of the island be asking here?
And John.... Alaska?!?! Besides, the highest elevation I could find in HOVE was 4920
