RE: Ceiling fan - David M - 06-02-2008

We planned for and installed ceiling fans in all the major living spaces in our house. So far, since Oct, we haven't needed to use them (yet).[Big Grin] We also installed windows in the gable walls near the roof peaks and those have never been closed - allow for adequate air exchange.[8D][8D] We do have metal roof (R20 insulation) and ProTec (R20) walls. I was tempted to try out the fans when Sophie tested the smoke alarm, but alas, the remotes battery had died.[Sad]

Glen,I am really impressed.I've been your fan before...
Do they make retractable blades?
Because that was the ugly part-a helicopter hanging from the ceiling...

Carey, thanks for your input on the metal roofs.

No retractable blades. Just make sure the blades are gorgeous and you won't want to see them retract.

Stillhope,

We are quite a ways up from the ocean -- mauka of Pahoa at 1050' elevation. We also have small windows at the roof peaks that are screen-only.

Because of the coqui, we close our windows at night and use our bedroom fan.

Thanks,Nancy.I forgot those..I guess,I gave to put up with the helicopter after all.Or put the bastards to use.Are they edible?

Jane,my windows are sliding ones, they are huge.
I've seen this term a lot.How does a "screen only" window look like?

RE: Ceiling fan - Kelena - 06-03-2008

There is no glass in the window frame, just a screen. I experienced this in a vacation rental near Honaunau. Screens on three sides.

Interesting.I thought so because the name is self-explanatory.But safety/rain?

RE: Ceiling fan - Carey - 06-03-2008

There are some really purdy fans now.... some with carved wood blades that look like palm fronds & stuff, even some that are made to look like an airplane.... so now it really is more of an aesthetic choice... even HD & HPM have some nicer looking fans...

OH, Screen only windows have some pluses (lots of area for breezes is the biggie) but you cannot close them if there is a wild fire (Waikobloa resisdents have this as a big complaint... but every area in Puna could have a wild fire...) & smoke is nasty & can damage belongings, even fabrics,
Rain, screen only windows need wide roof overhangs...
Security, only if very high up...
